Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Here's the problem that faced Jack Black and Kyle Gass when it came to making The Pick Of Destiny: how do you top your last effort, 2001's self-titled debut, when it contained the tale of how you wrote (and then forgot) "the best song in the world" ("Tribute")? A toughie, but if you're megalomaniacal comedy-rock duo Tenacious D, anything is possible - even if it contravenes plain logic and several laws of physics. A pumped-up hard rock opera that sees Black and Gass hunting for the eponymous guitar-plucker, the possession of which confers superhuman rocking abilities on its owner, The Pick Of Destiny both rocks hard – how could it not, with Dave Grohl behind the drumkit? – and rocks funny. The opening "Kickapoo" is an operatic scene-setter that features guest spots from both Meat Loaf (whose vocals, curiously, sound restrained next to Black's goofy rock howl) and ex-Sabbath man Ronnie James Dio, who imparts some secret wisdom in the arts of rocking. Other highlights come with "Classico", which recreates Mozart and Bach with added swear words, and "The Government Totally Sucks", which (as you might expect) makes up in passion what it lacks in insight. A comedy record, in other words, you'll actually want to listen to.--Louis Pattison

OK, first up - buy the deluxe version. It's worth it. When they say "deluxe", they mean it. It's a nod to Alice Cooper's 70's "packs". Not ONLY do you get a gorgeous "book-effect" box to tear the cellophane off, it has lots of goodies inside. There's a holographic CD case, a D poster. There are 8 (count 'em!) D Tarot Cards, where they take classic Tarot ideas, and make them their own, with D-themed artwork, and an interpretation card, so if you been following Ben Franklin's example (listen to "The Government Totally Sucks" and go with me here...) you can even do some fun readings.

That's not all.

Oh no, my friend, that's not all.

The box is foam-lined... and includes.... you guessed it...

THE PICK OF DESTINY.

Fun gimmicks, and these make it worth the extra £4 for the deluxe version, and more.

OK, so onto the songs.

1. Kickapoo: this is the scene-setter for the beginning of the movie. JB is living with his dad (Meatloaf) who's a crazy-ass reverend believing that rock'n'roll comes from the devil. Little does he know. Amazingly catchy, and changes feel a few times, as the guest lyricists join in using their own distinctive styles. Dio and Meatloaf send themselves up amazingly, and show they can kick back and just do it for the love. Oh yeah, and the royalties...

2. Classico. A song devoted to how wonderful KG is, set to the tune of Mozart. Classic, in every way.

3. Baby. A lonely, soulful tune, that devolves seamlessly into a screaming tot. Very clever indeed!

4. Destiny. OK. 37 seconds of filler with no point at all. Not even amusing, which would let them off. Bad call, guys.

5. History: a chronicling of the D's "Rise to Power" - nice, though certainly not the best on the album.

6. The Government Totally Sucks: Not the most intelligent and thoughtful dissection of democracy in action, but does actually mirror how a lot of people fed up of politicians actually view things in a single dimension. Also very amusing in presentation....

7. Master Exploder: a set piece, very nice too.

8. The Divide: 22 seconds of spoken interlude where KG has to make an important decision...!

9. Papagenu: JB finds his real daddy! Very 60's psychedelia meets CBBC theme tune. Scarily sing-a-long...

10. Dude I Totally Miss You: These guys ARE straight, right? Sounds very like a "please come back baby..." until you listen to the words

11. Break In City: Think Mission Impossible. With JB as Tom Cruise. Are we scared yet? Powerful and strong, yet thoroughly messed up!

12. Car Chase City: more of the same, with the ultimate line "F*** this S**t it's gone too far!" uttered in the middle of a car chase sequence - just what I would say in that situation!

13. BeezleBoss: The ultimate set-piece, and crowning achievement of the album. Tribute revisited, complete with Dave Grohl as the devil, with KG's bottom (and payment of the rent) as the prize...! Beautifully done, yet another spin on the entire "Devil Goes to Georgia" theme that Tribute messed with before. Some classic lines that I'm already hearing in the streets!

14. Pick of Destiny: The title piece, and the only one on the album that's even remotely radio friendly. Very catchy, and amazingly unlikely rhymes which, let's face it, are one of the D's strong points.

15. The Metal. A litany of challenges to the domination of The Metal, and how every one was slapped down into the dirt. As is only proper!

Overall, the album tells the story of the film. It's way more than a soundtrack, and I'm expecting to hear people singing along when the film goes on general release. It's very different to the last album, in that it's a "concept album" rather than just a collection of ramblings, and it's a little more polished. This is a Good Thing.

I can't recommend this highly enough. Buy it. Listen to it. Sing along to the songs in school or your workplace and get expelled / fired!

I randomly walked into Virgin today and saw this album on the shelf, not realising it was already out, so I picked it up instantly and saw it had 15 tracks and thought "Great!"

Dont get me wrong, the songs our great, however, I felt slightly annoyed to find out it's only 33 minutes long. But at the same time, it is well worth it. There is some great material on here, I wouldnt rate it as high as their first album, but I am pretty damn pleased with this new one.

The length of the album prevents it from reaching 5 stars, but it's really great to hear Jables and Kage back at it again.

They've even stuck the History of Tenacious D on here, titled "History" on the album, which I was pretty happy about!

4 out of 5 but damn good nonetheless!

I disagree with most of the Tenacious D fans on this site. I think this album is far better than their first one. The first one was more of a comedy album whereas this one rocks and has the comedy element as well.

Brilliant riffs and melodies that'll definitely grow on you.

'The Metal' is one of my favourites.

Hilarious album
Every song in this album is hilarious, thoroughly worth the money. Favourites include Classico, Papagenu and The Metal, although every song made me laugh.

Tenacious D are fanbloodytastic, but this album is a bit rubbish compared to the first one. POD, the title track to their upcoming film, is a great song and is very catchy. Read more
