About the Author

Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.

While taking a class in human anatomy at San Francisco City College, he discovered a way to effectively learn the subject by coloring in drawings, diagrams and names. The teacher of the course, Lawrence Elson, Ph.D. agreed to help him produce a coloring book. Elson wrote and Kapit designed and illustrated The Anatomy Coloring Book, which was published in 1977 and has been a widely-translated bestseller ever since. The Physiology Coloring Book was published in 1987, with the assistance of two professors from Berkeley: Robert Macey and Esmail Meisami. The Geography Coloring Book was published in 1991; Kapit drew the maps and wrote the text. The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in a second edition in 1993, and second editions of Geography and Physiology Coloring Books will be published in 1997.

Robert Macey is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Professor of Physiology and Chair of the Department of Physiology-Anatomy at Berkeley. Dr. Macey has written extensive research articles and reviews on membrane transport as well as a successful text on human physiology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Esmail Meisami is a professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois. He has authored and edited books on biology, physiology, human growth and development, and developmental neurobiology and has written numerous research papers on sensory systems and hormones in brain development. He received his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of California at Berkeley.

I am a Occupational therapy student and i found this especailly helpful!! it's excellent for physiology essay type exams and i am using it this year again for neurophysiology. A definite for visual learners! You're still learning by colouring even on those days when your motivation drops to study the text.

Not at all what I was expecting, diagrams are sometimes very tiny on the page, look more like scribbles/ hand drawn. Lack of explanations surrounding the diagrams. Pages are very crowded - less is more! Would have returned it to be honest.

I found this extremely useful for my physiology module last term, lot's of brilliantly detailed hand-drawn diagrams with plenty of information, including a detailed passage on the page to the left of the diagrams as well as descriptions within the diagrams. It begins on a broader scope of physiology and becomes more detailed as you progress into the book, beginning with the basics in cell physiology and moving on to topics such as respiration, nervous system, endocrine and hormone regulation. This helped to reaffirm information from lectures as well as to grasp aspects I wasn't fully understanding. Make sure you have a great variety of colouring pencils because you're going to need them!

Like the anatomy counterpart this is a fantastci book, it possibly looks more daunting at first, due to the sheer amount of information they have managed to fit on the pages, but again it all makes sense once you start to colour the diagrams. It would be a must for anyone who is a visual learner, the only thing I would say is that it was above and beyond what I needed for my anatomy and physiology exam. You could probably do well enough with the anatomy colourng book backed up with your notes.

This coloring book is very helpful for me, also on the difficult topics like the nervous system. I never did understand the nervous system very good and now suddenly I get it! At 1st glance the book looks really complicated and crowded but once started it's great and really easy to follow and clear. It is also fun to do. I also find it convenient that at the coloring page you find a short summary from the text at the left page, for some topics I only needed that.

This is the only book I used to pass physiology in med school. It is detailed enough, and the pictures are really useful.

This book has a deceiving title. It is ideal for those who want to do nursing or medical training. It is at A level and above. But so easy to understand. Purchased with the anatomy colouring book, they make a great pair. fantastic also for those who want to find out how the body works.
