5.0 out of 5 stars Photographic memories 1 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
I first picked up this album soon after its release in 1980. I had never actually heard any of the band's music, but I was intrigued by their contemporary description as "the poor man's Blondie" - and I liked the cover! It wasn't long before I was buying up their back catalogue of singles and jumping up and down in a sweating mass of bodies at the next available Photos gig at Bristol Polytechnic.

This album is choc(olate) full of blistering melodic pop songs driven by rhythmn section Olly Harrison (drums) and Dave Sparrow (grinding Rickenbacker bass) - with the underrated Steve Eagles on pre-Edge guitar mysteryonics and minx Wendy Wu on voice/ adolescent fantasy.

This edition from Cherry Red records represents and expanded package and includes new sleeve notes by Steve Eagles and others associated with the the band. Highlights are "Irene", "Barbarellas" (both main features of a 4-track EP issued prior to the LP's original release), "She's Artistic" and "Maxine". The package comes complete with the "Blackmail Tapes", a selection of covers and fledging self-compositions recorded "in a garage somewhere in Worcestershire" (a limited edition disc with the original release). Also included are the 'A' & 'B' sides of the band's first single - "I'm So Attractive" (worth the purchase price on its own) and "Guitar Hero" (no slouch)- and subsequent 'B' side "J T'Aime" (excellent). It would have been nice for the remaining two tracks of the Irene/Barbarellas EP ("Cridsilla" & "Shy") to have been included too, but - hey!

This album reached the heights of the charts on its original release. However the Photos never quite made it to the big time. Their second album "Crystal Tips and Mighty Mice", which could and should have consolidated their rise, was in the can but never released.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue classic debut album 1 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
A classic album that actually reached the top 10 upon release in 1980. The tracks sound a little dated now , however the essence of the music is representative of the period. I remember seeing the band at university and rushing into Birmingham to buy the album, unfortunately, I no longer have that copy, so this release is a timely reminder of how good strong catchy post punk songs can be. Signed to a major label and with a successful debut I'm surprised the second album Crystal Tips was never released. Hopefully that might soon see a release date, who know?

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS QUITE SIMPLY A STUNNING ALBUM 22 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
Me and a friend hitch-hiked from birmingham to manchester(first and last time i had ever hitched!!)as we had to see the photo's play again after their brilliant gig at birminghams Fighting cocks pub,we got there and found the gig was cancelled so we slept the night on a park bench in the rain!.but it was still worth it for the chance to see them again.this album and the now released follow up are both great pop/punk albums. Now wouldnt it be awesome if they reformed for some gigs!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A blast from the past. 1 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I recently purchased a usb turntable and had been burning my vinyl collection when I came across the 1st Photo's album. I was so impressed with the album that I had to buy it on CD as the quality of the vinyl recording was not quite good enough, but good enough for me to be shocked at just how good the music was. Over the years songs like Irene and Maxine have come into my head for no apparent reason apart from them being brilliant. Now listening to the album once again has made me realise just what a great band the Photo's were.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total class in all respects 19 April 2008
Format:Audio CD
Tear out your eyeballs Long Blondes, here are the originals, Blondie meets the Ramones. This includes the first single I'm So Attractive and is a pretty perfect set. If you like the bands named above then get this, I first saw them when i was 14 in Leamington spa or somewhere and how they melted the ground we stood on, I was in the front row, crushed to death and deafened by speakers in a little hall with 250 other flailing lunatics--aaahh you festival generation guys do not know you're born. Buy this now.
