Book Description

1 Feb 2011

An innovative and accessible guide to more than 2,000 years of thought

To the complete novice learning about philosophy can be daunting - The Philosophy Book changes all that. With the use of powerful and easy-to-follow images, succinct quotations, and explanations that are easily understandable, this book cuts through any misunderstandings to demystify the subject.

Each chapter is organised chronologically, and covers not only the big ideas, but the philosophers who first voiced them, as well as cross-referencing with earlier and later ideas and thinkers. The Philosophy Book untangles knotty theories and sheds light on abstract concepts, and is perfect for anyone with a general interest in how our social, political, and ethical ideas are formed, as well as students of philosophy and politics.

Covers major and niche topics, from moral ethics to philosophies of religion

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class Introduction 18 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book is by far the best of its type that I have ever come across - and I have read many. It gives an excellent overview of philosophers and their thought from the beginnings right up to date, and it does so in clear, unambiguous writing that is a pleasure to read. The book presents exactly what it says on the cover, "Big ideas simply explained". The context in which the various philosophers worked is covered well in introductory remarks to each of its sections. To produce such an excellent text is a considerable achievement by the authors: it is no small task to distil complex and too often arcanely written material in such a way. I have shown the book to quite a number of people, most of them with some knowlege of philosophy, and they have all been impressed. Most have ordered it. If you have tried some of the weighty tomes about the history of philosophy and been put off, then this is the book for you. It will whet your appetite to read more into the subject. And by the way, the production of the book is admirable. First class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy brought to the common man! 12 Jan 2012
By J Shake
Format:Hardcover
Being one of those people who has had litte previous experience when it comes to philosophy, my immediate impression when I recieved this book was one of immense relief. A quick glance at the inside pages reveals clearly set out, succint, yet engaging explanations of a wide range of philosophical theories. Alongside these explanations are helpful contextual summaries, various illustrations linking in with the information, and as an added bonus, hand picked quotations from the philosophers being discussed.
Overall the book provides a wealth of knowledge, without ever becoming bogged down by dreary descriptions or irrelevant information. For those who wish to simply pick and choose the book also caters very well, with different schools of thought, periods of time and various 'approaches' set out clearly and linked throughout. In addition to this, 'The Philosophy Book' is equipped with an equally informative directory and glossary, perfect for those who want concise summaries of not just the philosophy itself, but those behind it, or need easy explanations of terminology.

Offering simple explanations, and a wealth of clearly presented and absorbing information, this book is perfect for anyone from a student to those simply wishing to dabble. Buy it, buy it now!

By R. WEST-SOLEY TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
If you're a newbie to Philosophy, it's sometimes overwhelming to decide simply where to start. DK have a knack of publishing friendly, bold, draw-you-in guides, and the Philosophy Book is a brilliant dip-in-and-out book in the same vein. It allows the curious (but overwhelmed) reader to wander through the field without the stress of starting out blind. With all the big thinkers given at least a page summary (more in the case of the 'celebs' of the subject!), there's enough information to feel both a bit more informed, and enthused to further research if anything grabs you in particular.

Each thinker is boiled down to a soundbite, heading that section (a selection of these on the eye-catching and effective binding of the book). As much as soundbites don't quite capture everything a philosopher stood for, it's nonetheless an easy way in to some of the major theories. With additional information on the broad schools of thought, the book is well-rounded and perfect as a road map to Philosophy - whether you're new to the subject, or know a little and want to reignite your interest. A great addition to the DK range (and the others in this series - Economics, Politics and Psychology - look just as promising).

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to philosophy. 23 May 2011
By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the most accessible and exciting introductions to philosophy that I've come across. Written in plain English by a group of UK philosophers, the chapters include 'The Ancient World', 'Renaissance and the Age of Reason', 'The Age of Revolution', 'The Modern World' & 'Contemporary Philosophy'.
'The Philosophy Book' concludes with a Directory giving brief descriptions of 59 lesser-known philosophers and a Glossary of philosophical terms.
Beautifully designed and illustrated this intellectually stimulating and comprehensive book is a superb guide for anyone wishing to discover more about philosophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction 18 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The book is written as an introduction to the work of many philosophers, not just western ones, and gives a simple explanation of their way of thinking as well as mentioning some of their main points of view in philosophy. It makes excellent use of well presented flow diagrams and text and gives a time line for you to place these philosophers in. Although it is clearly not as in depth as the original works of many of these thinkers (who's quotes are interspersed in the text) it is clearly just an introduction to the subject, and a colourful and concise one at that!!! Excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning about philosophy 3 July 2011
By Maureen
Format:Hardcover
This is a marvelous presentation of the many philosophies presented from 2500BC to the present day.It does give previous thoughts along the same lines as well as those coming after. It is the first book on philosophy that I have found a clear presentation of the ideas of so many differsnt philosophers. I am still reading the book as it takes time to digest what it contains and only am reading it for pleasure. It is quite an education. Maureen Anderson
