Product Description

Product Description

An innovative and accessible guide to more than 2,000 years of thought

To the complete novice learning about philosophy can be daunting - The Philosophy Book changes all that. With the use of powerful and easy-to-follow images, succinct quotations, and explanations that are easily understandable, this book cuts through any misunderstandings to demystify the subject.

Each chapter is organised chronologically, and covers not only the big ideas, but the philosophers who first voiced them, as well as cross-referencing with earlier and later ideas and thinkers. The Philosophy Book untangles knotty theories and sheds light on abstract concepts, and is perfect for anyone with a general interest in how our social, political, and ethical ideas are formed, as well as students of philosophy and politics.

Covers major and niche topics, from moral ethics to philosophies of religion

This book is by far the best of its type that I have ever come across - and I have read many. It gives an excellent overview of philosophers and their thought from the beginnings right up to date, and it does so in clear, unambiguous writing that is a pleasure to read. The book presents exactly what it says on the cover, "Big ideas simply explained". The context in which the various philosophers worked is covered well in introductory remarks to each of its sections. To produce such an excellent text is a considerable achievement by the authors: it is no small task to distil complex and too often arcanely written material in such a way. I have shown the book to quite a number of people, most of them with some knowlege of philosophy, and they have all been impressed. Most have ordered it. If you have tried some of the weighty tomes about the history of philosophy and been put off, then this is the book for you. It will whet your appetite to read more into the subject. And by the way, the production of the book is admirable. First class.

This is one of the most accessible and exciting introductions to philosophy that I've come across. Written in plain English by a group of UK philosophers, the chapters include 'The Ancient World', 'Renaissance and the Age of Reason', 'The Age of Revolution', 'The Modern World' & 'Contemporary Philosophy'.
'The Philosophy Book' concludes with a Directory giving brief descriptions of 59 lesser-known philosophers and a Glossary of philosophical terms.
Beautifully designed and illustrated this intellectually stimulating and comprehensive book is a superb guide for anyone wishing to discover more about philosophy.

This is a marvelous presentation of the many philosophies presented from 2500BC to the present day.It does give previous thoughts along the same lines as well as those coming after. It is the first book on philosophy that I have found a clear presentation of the ideas of so many differsnt philosophers. I am still reading the book as it takes time to digest what it contains and only am reading it for pleasure. It is quite an education. Maureen Anderson
