5.0 out of 5 stars Another great kindle bargain 19 May 2013

A well-chosen collection of short stories by one of the masters of SF. Most will be familiar to seasoned SF fans, such as `Beyond Lies the Wub', and `The Hanging Stranger'; the first an exercise in wry humour that was a PK Dick speciality, the second a chilling tale of a familiar world transformed into a nightmare. Most reflect the Cold War era in which they were written, providing settings of superpower confrontation or the aftermath of nuclear war.

The story - new to me - that made the greatest impression, `Tony and the Beetles' projected the anti-colonial movement of the 1950s onto the galactic plane, with the `beetles' playing the role of a colonised people encouraged by the imminent defeat of their human overlords to throw off their shackles. The collection ends with an entrancing tale of an Eden in which PK Dick makes allusions to Homer's `Odyssey'.

A good kindle presentation with links for individual stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a bargain. 8 Jun. 2013

Apparantly Philip K.Dick wrote 120 short stories as well as his famous novels,so this is just a handful of them.
Cost me 34p!Brilliant.
All the stories are good, obviously some better than others, and I know that I read many of them in my youth....but great to read again.
I think the story titled 'Second Variety' was made into a film called,I think,'Screamers' with Peter Weller.
Anyway,a real bargain and therein lies the wub.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat dated now 1 July 2013

I really enjoyed these stories and it's easy to see why Dick was one of the all time sci fi greats. This is worth a read and is a glimpse into American cold war mentality and lifestyle, recommended

there is no better way to spend the exact amount of 47 pence. a variety of absorbing and original sf, well selected and presented, from the mighty pen of the genre's undoubted master. pkd's material works well in short story and compilation form, and presents the reader with a barrage of original ideas and concepts, written in his distinctive manner, drawing you into worlds of his making. '2nd variety' and 'the variable man' are personal favourites from this collection, although quality throughout is the benchmark. so 47p for these staggering tales, from an author that the world has barely caught up with? for both the hardened appreciator, looking for a kindle selection, or the newly interested, it is a zero brainer.
also, living in hope that a movie adaption will someday be a worthy salute to his talents ('blade runner still runs as closest)

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Philip K. Dick - of course its good 31 Aug. 2013

If you know PKD there is no point in me telling you anything about him. You know him, you love him, you will buy this.

If you have never heard of him before (other than maybee as the guy that wrote the book "Blade Runner" is based on) then I envy you, for you are goign to experience the joy of discovering one of the most brilliant minds behind sci-fi and general "out-of-the-box thinking" that has ever existed.

This collection is a great place to start

Great short stories but in an old fashioned style. More about war and dominance than friendly alien contact. Easy reading and fun.
