Biography

After a three year ‘gestation period’ when the band performed under a variety of chimerical guises (Wooden Trees, Robert Redford - often with bags over their heads), they finally settled on ‘The Phantom Band’ and emerged from the shadows in 2009 with their barnstorming debut ‘Checkmate Savage’. Instantly hailed as one of the most exciting and beguiling new talents to emerge from Scotland in years, The Phantom Band blazed a trail onto UK television screens with a performance on the BBC’s Culture Show and high profile slots at T in the Park and France’s Transmusicales festival.

Their music remains tantalisingly difficult to pigeon-hole: a disorientating amalgam of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Captain Beefheart, Neu!, Nick Cave and their own musically obtuse compatriots The Beta Band. A five strong creative cabal of artists and musicians, The Phantom Band’s unconventional approach to musical mash-ups often extended to their live shows which featured smoke breathing wolf heads and Stairmasters so the audience could work out mid-set. This bizarre approach helped them recruit an impressive array of fans, from REM’s Peter Buck to the world renowned comic book artist Frank Quitely (who designed the artwork for their 7” single ‘The Howling’).

Following the unanimous praise heaped on their debut, The Phantom Band have recently completed work on their much-anticipated follow up entitled ‘The Wants’, which is scheduled for a worldwide release in October 2010. The band’s international profile continues to rise following their award for Best Album of 2009 from Berlin’s daily newspaper ‘Der Tagesspeigel’ and a recent invitation to make their US live debut at 2010’s CMJ Music Marathon.
