i couldn't believe it when i found out that this documentary on the legendary peter green was finally going to be released on dvd and about time too.
this is the same documentary that was broadcast on bbc 4 about 3 years ago but on this dvd there is a considerable difference: the t.v broadcast lasted for about 90 minutes where as the dvd includes footage that wasn't previously shown. as a result, the running time of this programme is just under 2 hours. also as a special feature, there is some extra interview footage that was added onto the dvd separately. altogether, the running time is about 157 minutes. what more could you want?
first of all, the average, inferior line-up of later on doesn't get so much as a look-in. this is all about peter green and the early years of fleetwood mac, which i consider to be by far the best period.
secondly, it is great to see 4 out of the 5 band members interviewed. sadly, danny kirwan is the odd one out, he seems to have disappeared altogether. still, at least we get to see mick fleetwood, john mcvie and jeremy spencer interviewed together and that is a considerable bonus.
peter green himself, comes across very well and chats freely about his career and his later life when he had his own issues to deal with. happily, he looks and sounds as though he has recovered considerably.
the only negative comment i can think of, is that there was no mention of the classic gigs that the band played at the boston tea party in february 1970. on those three nights alone, peter green's fleetwood mac rarely played with such passion, raw energy and imagination. however, that is a mere quibble. this documentary is the perfect opportunity to witness a tribute to one of the world's greatest guitarists.
