How do you commit the perfect murder . . . ? A Quick Read from the bestselling author of the Roy Grace series

Book Description

Victor Smiley and his wife Joan have been married for nearly twenty years, but each barely recognises the person they wake up with every morning. Victor is so fed up with his job at the local egg-box factory –as well as distracted by his visits to his favourite prostitute, Kamila– that he hardly notices his wife’s constant ridicule. Joan has resigned herself to the fact that Victor will never see beyond her double-chin to a new hair cut or outfit. She even puts up with his constant snoring which keeps her up night after night. Just. For unbeknownst to Victor, Joan is taking her sweet revenge: spending large amounts of money on his credit card, kitting herself out in a sexy new wardrobe, to impress her secret lover, Don. But then, as the bills mount, Victor loses his job. Soon he realises that the only way he can achieve his dream of setting up home with Kamila is to get Joan out of the picture. But Victor is about to get a nasty surprise. For he’s not the only one with murder on his mind . . .

The Perfect Read 24 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
The creator of the Roy Grace series, Peter James, has taken time out to deliver a chilling stand-alone novel to his readers. The Perfect Murder centres on the lives of Victor and Joan Smiley, a couple whose twenty-year marriage has finally grown stale. Victor hates Joan: and for her, the feeling is mutual. Secretly, they are plotting to dispose of each other. In one brutal split second, fantasy becomes reality for one of them, and it certainly wasn't the way they had planned it. Dealing with the consequences is far more devastating than they realised - and it's not simply about what the police will do. For the survivor of the marriage, the author skillfully takes us on a rollercoaster ride of terrifying emotions: fear: guilt: sorrow: anxiety and, eventually anger. But when you finally think you've seen it all, he throws in a nasty little twist for the novel's finale, proving once again that Peter James is one of the finest and most dedicated crime writer's the UK has ever produced. Ten out of ten for an excellent plot. Long live the king of crime.

I have just read Peter James's The Perfect Murder and couldn't put it down until I had finished it....I love the mix of comedy and drama and the fact that once again it is set in my home town of Brighon. Hope I don't have to wait too long for Peter's next book!

A very easy, fast paced novel, personally I think its one of Peter James best novels, unlike most short stories the ending wasn't rushed, instead the ending had been put into an earlier part of the plot. Definatly worth reading.

Good read
This was a good quick read; some unexpected twists along the way, although the ending - which constiututed the 'perfect murder', could be anticipated as one approached the end. Read more

OK - short story
Just OK - didn't realise when I bought it that it was a short story, so didn't have the depth of his usual books.

thankfully it was short
i put thankfully short as it is the best way to describe what an awful read this was, i turned the pages in the hope of some improvement but little was to be found, very dull

A great read
It may have been created for 'adult education', but this is a great read in itself. Light and good humoured, with a lovely twist at the end. Highly reccomended.
