1.0 out of 5 stars Lesson Imperfect 4 July 2014
I have to thank a colleague from another college who alerted me to this book. It has some interesting ideas in it - although nothing out of the ordinary, and familiar to those who looked through Petty, Wiliams and their like. However, the very idea of a 'perfect' lesson is egregious nonsense. Classrooms are always messy, contingent places and learning always takes place over the longer term - a cycle of lessons, each with their strengths and faults. This is what makes teaching such an intellectually and affectively engaging activity. But college managers love this kind of thing - the promise of a quick fix of simple routines, or, as this book claims, 'magic ingredients'! In the author's world, everything is perfect, great and brilliant - count the adjectives. Whilst teachers need to take responsibility for their practice, the omission of any reference here to the realities of teaching work in contemporary further education is likely to irritate anyone but the most air-headed of quality managers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for achieving Outstanding 15 Jun 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book provides not only the answer(s) to WHAT is an outstanding lesson but also excellent guidance about HOW to deliver an excellent lesson in FE each and every time. I can use this as a resource both for my own teaching and learning and also with colleagues who want to achieve outstanding for their next lesson observation. The checklists at the end of each chapter provide a really useful overview and encourage the reader to explore the issues in more depth and detail. It is a book I know I will use again and again.
