Product Description

Product Description

In 1611 a book was published which would become the most familiar and widely read in the world: the King James Bible. For centuries it has been a religious and literary classic. But how did this 'noblest monument of English prose', in Robert Lowth's famous words, come to be? In the 13th century England was the only country in Europe to ban explicitly the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. For centuries, English Bibles were burned and translators executed. Guiding us through the forces that shaped King James' masterpiece, Derek Wilson explores the immense transformation of religion and society that led to its origin, tells the history of its making, and celebrates the breadth of its unparalleled influence. The story that unfolds will captivate all who enjoy history, religion, literature, or language. Popular historian Derek Wilson came to prominence thirty years ago, after graduating from Cambridge, with A Tudor Tapestry: Men, Women and Society in Reformation England. He is the highly acclaimed author of over 50 books and has written and presented numerous radio and television programmes. He lives and writes in Devon.

By D. P. Mankin TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you want to know more about the King James version of the Bible then this relatively slim volume is as a good a starting point as any given the recent (and ongoing!) crop of books on the subject (I await Melvin Bragg's tome with interest). The author places the King James version in its historical context in a straight forward, no-nonsense manner and moves the narrative along at a good pace. He explains how the bible came into existence and places it within its historical context. He also discusses the many inaccuracies that have characterised past versions. Some of this is quite fascinating. Its an enjoyable and informative account, written also with some wit. If you are after an insightful, well-written and reasonably thorough introduction to the subject then this is well worth buying.

The People's Bible 22 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
Wilson's book is really a history of the English bible. It takes us on a tour of all the translations before and after the KJV. There are numerous quotations scattered throughout that are both interesting and helpful. Ch4-7 deal with the KJV proper. Ch8 with the KJV in other countries. The remainder of the book covers such issues as accuracy and modern translations. There is a helpful look at the division between liberals and conservatives and the issue of final authority.
Overall an interesting and helpful study, though there were a few things I disagree with. Wilson's opinions are not always correct but they do not interfere with the flow of the book.
Attractively produced in hardback

Great 1 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover
This being the 400th Anniversary of the Authorised Version of the Scriptures I was eager to read something on the subject of how we got such a translation

This book surpassed my expectations. It did not seek to push the AV as the only accurate Bible nor did it fail to point out the faults in other translation. In the main I feel it was balanced and if one comes to it with no preconceived ideas has a lot to teach, it certainly taught me a lot!!.

I would not cross every "t" and dot every "i" in it but on the whole I am glad I bought it and gained from its pages.
