Appalling 1 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This has to be one of the worst books I've read for some time. I'd never heard of Keith Hoare before but I saw this book in Amazon's Kindle top 100 bestsellers list for 70p and decided to take a chance on it. That was a mistake.

There are two fundamental problems with this book. The first is that Mr Hoare simply can't write very well. It became swiftly apparent that this book is a vanity publication; Mr Hoare appears to be the only author listed on his publisher's site. I could overlook that if the story was well thought out and gripping; the subject matter definitely holds a lot of potential for a thriller. Unfortunately it reads like a disturbing middle aged man's fantasy of the world of people trafficking. I had to stop reading fairly early in the book when the main character, a 17 year old schoolgirl, finds herself being sexually brutalised and raped by a crew of seamen and finds it pleasurable. The notion that a child being gang raped by strangers would find pleasure in the experience seems very implausible and disturbing to me. I had no desire to go any further with Hoare after that.

Badly written and disturbing for the wrong reasons. Avoid.

Perhaps I should have read the reviews before I bought the book - but then for 71p it's not like it's cost a fortune.

The plot - a young 17 year old schoolgirl kidnapped in revenge for something her father did, transported by ship where she gets gang raped (and seemingly enjoys it), before being sold at a private auction for $40 000,then embarks on a mission to get home which involves the SAS rescuing her - has the potential for a good read. Where it falls down is in how she seems to have the killer instinct which has evolved from paintballing at weekends, combined with judo and other martial arts lessons. These skills enable her to outwit the SAS who are there to rescue her, leading to the death of many of the soldiers.

This is a serious topic that could have been used to better effect to raise awareness of the plight of people kidnapped for people trafficking.

Describing our heroine, it came across as the fantasy of a middle aged man.

I can't decide if I liked it or not - but I think for 71p I wasn't ripped off.

As for the heroine, she sounds amazing but thankfully it's all just a piece of fiction.
