Quite superb 12 Mar 2009

As a long time fan of Fairport convention and Sandy Denny, especially the Leige and Leaf album, a friend recommended this little gem to me. What a superb find! There is a bit of a mixture of styles to be found here, mainly British trad/folk, but with tinges of jazz and blues. The players, especially Jansch and Renbourne on guitars and McShee on vocals, are delightful. The rhythmn section (Thompson and Cox) are no slouches either.

All in all a delightful album, one that I would happily recommend to anybody, especially those who enjoy early Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. I am now off to purchase the rest of their back catalogue!

so you've got bert jansch one of the greatest folk guitarists or guitarists of all time and john renbourne the most immatated guitarist of his time, jacqui mcshee who i can only discribe as the beth orton of her time (she also shares likeness' with nico from the velvet underground), and danny thompson on bass and terry cox on drums and what do you get?...possibly the greatest fusions of folk, jazz, blues of all time, possibly even one of the greatest albums of its time. This record is quintessentially sixties. If you like your blues, your folk, your jazz, buy this album. I love it and you will too, i can almost guarantee.

I confess that until Bert Jansch died recently I had never heard of Pentangle. I was however so impressed with what those on Radio 2 and 6 Music had to say about his guitar playing that I looked him up on Amazon. I ordered The Pentangle even though I knew it was folk. Now no offence to those Folkies out there but it is a genre that I, until now have happily avoided simply cos it ain't my thing. This album though I found very listenable. So whilst I am by no means a convert I can certainly see where the adulation for Bert Jansch and of course the rest of Pentangle came from. However large your collection is, a copy of The Pentangle will enlarge it out of all proportion. RESPECT the late great Bert Jansch.
