"Sure to attract newly independent readers." "--Publishers Weekly" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

Otto isn't an ordinary penguin - he is the first penguin chick to be born that year, which means that it is his job to look after all the other young penguins. But out in the snow and ice of Antarctica there is an awful lot to learn, and Otto has to discover for himself how to swim, dive and catch fish before he can teach anyone else. And how will he do that when all the grown-ups are too busy to help?

The story of Otto growing up is so beautifully read by Maureen Lipman that the characters really do appear large as life in your imagination. This story keeps our four year-old mesmerised time after time and is perfect for car journeys. It is also full of interesting information about emperor penguins and other Antarctic animals - we have all learnt something listening to this.

Finally, as important as it is that it keeps the children entertained, it is just as charming for adults - crucial if listening to it for the umpteenth time!

My little boy is 4 years old and he has always loved stories. However, this is the first story he has had where there are more words than pictures. He has been absolutely enthralled and enchanted by Otto and his journey to becoming a fully grown penguin. While the illustrations are wonderful it is the actual story that has held his interest. This is a fantastic book to use as a transition from picture books to actual story books. I have read this to him about 20 times in the last 10 days! We have now moved onto the "Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark" by the same author and he is enjoying it almost as much.

I bought this book for my six-year-old daughter who was extremely disappointed when she saw it. Regardless, that evening I read the first story and she was hooked. Lovely stories and the main character is just like a curious child. Perfect for bed-time reading as every chapter is a story in itself which comes to a conlusion, so you can insist on stopping and turning the light out!
