5.0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Classic Science Fiction 28 Mar 2007
By R. F. Stevens TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Some of the best SF writers of the '40s, '50s and '60s, the true golden age of Classic SF, are gathered together in a collection of 36 original short stories.

If you have never read SF, or expect it to be rayguns and space ships, then think again, and prepare to be entertained. Some of these stories contain very deep philosophies, but are presented in an easy manner designed to sell in a commercial magazine. They all bear re-visiting, since after a few readings one realises what the authors are really saying under the flowing words.

The short story is an art form; to be able to tell a tale completely, in the minimum of words, requires a high level of skill and talent. Here, it is demonstrated exquisitely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back where I started from 28 Dec 2011
By Bob Sherunkle TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was my introduction to science fiction in the mid 1960s. Not every story is a classic, but there are enough gems from the "Golden Age" to make this the best SF anthology I have ever read. It includes my all-time favourite SF short story, Common Time by James Blish. Someone (Penguin themselves?) should have the wit to re-issue and re-promote this collection. Meanwhile, do as I did and get a second-hand copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader 3 April 2008
By Blue Tyson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
An omnibus collection of the three Penguin Science Fiction anthologies in series that Aldiss edited in the sixties. At 4,3.5 and 4, pretty much sounds to me like we give this a 4 overall.

----

A 1960s anthology, and a good one. In the introduction Aldiss talks about what he and others see Science Fiction as, and the role it can play.

The second Penguin SF anthology by Aldiss, but not as good as the first, averaging only 3.41 compared to the 3.54 of the first, which is still fairly reasonable for a reprint anthology.

The third of Aldiss' 60s Penguin science fiction anthology series. It is not quite as good as the first, but better than the second, and overall the whole series average around 3.50. Right on that number, actually, for this volume.

We lost this book sometime back and it's always been one of my favorite collections of sci-fi stories. Reading it again just brought back all the great stories in an even better way!
