This book was my own first introduction to its subject. I agree that it is unsuccessful, on account of it brevity, in summarising the arguments of philosophers. On the other hand, I have often returned to it in preference to Russell (which is just a little too quirky for my liking) and Kenny's much larger history.

As a history it can't really be taken seriously but as an historical sketch it has grown on me and I can't bring myself to be too hard on it. At Penguin prices it is good value and I would not discourage anyone who is curious from using it as a "quick-start" introduction to the subject.

Messy and confused 29 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Quite a bad presentation. Very messed up and unsystematic. Definitely not a book for learning history of philosphy. The author tries to summarize complicated concepts in a few lines and simultaneously tries to mention as much as possible about each philosopher. The result is mediocre. To grasp anything one has to read each chapter at least twice often more. A mixture of the authors personal opinions into the text does not make it more intelligeable at all. Going back and forth between different aspects of each philosopher's presentation makes it difficult to retain what has been read. All in all not a good book ofr someone who wants to learn
