Prof. Service has put together an excellent overview of the last 110 years or so of Russian history. It must be stressed that this is all very broad brush - in only 570 pages, it would be impossible to treat so enormous a subject in full depth. But he has steered a course comfortably between skimming over events and going into too much detail. (That said, some elements of Soviet history - such as the war in Afghanistan - are slightly neglected as being not strictly relevant to a history of Russia). Occasionally the barrage of names can confuse - not always aided by his system of transliteration - but in general, the book holds together well. It balances analysis and narrative, though there isn't much sense of differing historical schools of thought, except in the introduction.
At the end of the day, this is an introductory history that more than fulfils its role.
