Book Description

29 Mar 2007 Penguin Reference Library

Our very own 'national treasure' (as declared by John Humphrys) David Crystal brings us yet another quintessential knowledge compendium. The new edition of The Penguin Factfinder has been fully revised and updated to reflect recent changes in politics, sport, culture and the arts to the end of 2006.

In an age where information is easy to find but hard to verify, Crystal brings us a refreshingly straightforward resource. The Penguin Factfinder is about facts – no jargon or flowery descriptions, no error messages or anonymous sources – just the basic facts from one of Britain's most trusted and authoratitive information providers. We believe every word to be true. Where else can you get a guarantee like that?

3.0 out of 5 stars reference book 23 Mar 2010
OK. I have a previous edition under the Cambridge banner so knew what I was getting except binding and feel of this latest one not as good as the original. I would imagine that is down to cost considerations?

2.0 out of 5 stars culturally biased facts 27 Dec 2008
Both "The Penguin Factfinder" and "The Penguin Book of Facts" are excellent books to look up objective data, like Fahrenheit-Celsius conversion, the periodic table of elements, or the population of Canada.

Both books, however, are so heavily biased in favour of the English-speaking world that all the lists are suspect, and therefore perfectly hopeless as reliable comparative sources. I would have expected Penguin to do much better than this.
