Book Description

15 Nov 1993
This companion to the editor's "Penguin Encyclopedia of Ancient Civilizations" goes beyond the misleading definition of "classical" civilization, which is traditionally reserved for Greco-Roman antiquity, and examines the five great civilizations which were at their height between 550BC and 600AD: the Chinese, the Indians, the Persians, the Greeks and their Roman heirs.

This is a reference book which falls somewhere in that grey area between the realm of the reasonably well informed lay person and the well informed academic. I'm glad to have it in my library and it is well worth the money. However, the authors of the articles often presume a basic knowledge of classical civilizations which the lay person usually does not have.
