This book is about a young boy who's father is a pearl diver, Saeed is going to learn how to dive and his father is going to teach him. It is the start of the pearling season and he joins his father on his first trip on the waters of the Arabian Gulf. Saeed learns how to pearl dive and discovers the treasures and dangers of the sea. I bought this book because my daughter who is nine is reading it in school as a class, she has raved about it but they only have photo copies to work off and the pictures are unclear so I thought having the book would help her, she loves it and would recommend it to children of a similar age and older, the book is for children aged 8 - 12.

This book crosses a number of categories - it is picture book, story book and fact book. We are taken into the world of Saeed, who is only six, as he learns the traditional trade of pearl diving. He spends the whole summer out at sea with his father on a pearling dhow, and we learn about a way of life (often dangerous) which was hugely important in the Arabian Gulf. Share with Saeed as he learns about the wonders of the sea, and how it sustains the pearl fishers through the long months. The delicate watercolour illustrations are perfect for conveying the atmosphere at sea and really involve the reader in the story. This is an informative story and a lovely way to learn about pearl fishing.

This is about the pearl diver and Saeed his dad and people part of the crew are learning how to dive. My sister is reading the pearl diver at her school and I'm going to buy it for her. Saeed's dad learnt him how to do pearl diving. Saeed thought and found it was hard. But he kept practicing and practicing until he got the hang of it. Saeed found a pearl. It was sad when he had to do pearl diving with his dad and he couldn't see his parents until next September. Some bits were sad and some bits were exciting. It was in Arabic and translated in English.
