Most people will probably consider buying this book just to get some ideas on where to go walking and hiking around the Peak District. That's fine, as long as you're ready to properly plan your route and it's not too important to be able to simply walk the routes laid out in this book.
The places suggested here are superb, faultless and broad in choice, environment and difficulty. It genuinely represents a good range of experiences walking the Peak District National Park. As a source of inspiration and a challenging start for new walkers it is an excellent book. It will take you to some of the most stunning and exciting countryside this country has. You'll want to visit everyone of the 50 destinations.
For some of these walks all you need to do is follow the book. However, do not assume that all the walks are achievable by simply following the routes laid out here. Some of these walks are quite challenging. In some cases you will need to prepare the route yourself the traditional way. Be prepared to make and follow your own plans carefully, as the book will be of no use whatsoever. At times the maps in the book are deeply inadequate, lacking detail, and you will require at least an OS map and compass with a well laid out route. Also the instructions can sometimes be extremely vague and don't contribute much except confusion.
The routes they haven chosen to detail - when you've figured them out and transfered to some proper form of navigation - are actually well chosen, balanced and can be quite active and challenging. Once familiar with these places, you can obviously begin to design your own routes.
I recommend this book highly as a source of inspiration - even for seasoned Peak hikers, there is bound to be at least ten places you haven't heard of here. Just make sure you can find your own way around its suggestions.
