Book Description

In the Sixties, Athene Forster is the most glamorous girl of her generation. Nicknamed the Last Deb, she is also beautiful, spoilt and out of control. When she agrees to marry dashing young heir Douglas Fairley-Hulme her parents breathe a sigh of relief. But within two years rumours have begun to circulate about Athene's affair with a young salesman.

Thirty five years on, Suzanna Peacock is struggling with her glamorous mother's legacy. The only place she finds comfort is in her shop, The Peacock Emporium, a coffee shop-cum-curio store, decorated in her own image, which provides a haven for other misfits in the town. There she makes perhaps the first real friends of her life, including Alejandro, a male midwife, escaping his own ghosts in Argentina.

But the spectre of Athene and the shop itself combine to set in place a chain of tragic events, forcing Suzanna to confront the feelings she has disguised for so long - and her family, in their varying ways, finally to deal with the events of the past. And Suzanna discovers the key to her history, and her happiness, may have been in front of her all along.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice little gem of a novel 14 Dec 2009
By Nicola F (Nic) TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is the second novel of Moyes' I've read and she's quickly becoming a favourite author of mine, mainly due to her ability to create quirky characters and imaginitive settings.

The Peacock Emporium focuses on Suzanna Peacock, a somewhat 'spoiled little rich girl,' her struggling marriage and her family secrets. It's centered around her vintage knick-knacky shop and the people she encounters there with a nice dash of romance and a splash of heartache thrown in for good measure.

The story jumps backwards and forwards in time from different characters perspectives which *could* be confusing though eventually Moyes ties it all together with a nice lacey bow. I went through stages of despising and feeling sympathy for all the characters involved, which I think is the sign of a good author and a good read. I was sorry to see this book end, I wish there was a Peacock Emporium in my local high street!

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow Start 22 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I did enjoy this eventually; it took for me an exceptionally long time to read, over a week. I found it very slow and it took me ages to feel involved enough in the story to want to read much more than a chapter at a time. The first few chapters are important as they introduce the reader to the history of the heroine's family background. At the time this may seem irrelevant but persevere and read beyond this and it will all click into place.
The protagonist is Suzanna Peacock who with her husband has returned to live in the small country town of her birth. An emotionally disturbed young woman she has a lot to come to terms with in her life, especially her past and the way her mother though long dead still seems to affect her happiness. The only place Suzanna seems to be comfortable with herself is in the Peacock Emporium the shop she opens and it is here we learn the stories of the complex cast of characters that are drawn to the Emporium. A series of dramatic events threaten Suzanna's stability but in true chick lit style there is a happy ending.
