The Null-A trilogy is one of the classic SF sets that all serious collectors should own. This is the second in the sequence, originally serialised in 1948 as The Players of Null-A.

The ideas of General Semantics were highly original in the 1930s, and caused much puzzlement and criticism back in 1945 when laid out as the bones underneath the plot in The World of Null-A first published as a serial by the magazine Astounding Science Fiction. The third book Null-A Three was written almost four decades later after much pressure from fans and publishers.

First published in book form in 1956, Pawns continues to follow the life of Gilbert Gosseyn in his quest to discover who he really is and for what purpose he was created. A bald summary I admit, but I really don't want to spoil what is a most entertaining and thought provoking novel - even now after all this time.

Be warned, the reviews for The World of Null-A almost give away too much of the plot for that first book, but fortunately they will not spoil reading this one, or the third. All three novels stand on their own, but it helps with the reading pleasure if they are read in the correct sequence.
