Patrice Leconte has become one of the most pre-eminent of European filmmakers over the last 30 years showing an admiral versilitity for period, straight drama, thriller, black comedy and whimsy that has endeared him to many.
The 5 films in this set are
The Hairdresser's Husband(19900
The film that launched Leconte internationally is a bittersweet comedy full of charm and wistfulness with a heavy dose of eroticism to boot.Jean Rochefort plays Antoine who from a child loved going to the hairdressers. In adulthood he buys one after sampling the delights of the beautiful and sensuous Anna Galiena .They marry and spend an idyllic life reveling in each other's eccentricities until...
One of a kind film not to be missed and quite funny too.
Ridicule(1996)
Historical drama can come off somewhat shallow and a little too fond of itself but there is much to enjoy in this tale of life at King Louis XVI'S court where a rapier wit is needed in order to get ahead.Charles Berling is first rate as Ponceludon De Malavoy a man determined to make his mark.Dazzling verbal dexterity and exquisite period detail carry this piece of fluff along way.
Monsieur Hire(1989)
Adapted from a story by Georges Simenon,Hire is one of the best "thrillers" of the 80s holding up remarkably well thanks in no small part to Michael Nyman's beautiful score, superb performances and Leconte's delicate handling of obssession and loneliness as he channels Hitchcock and Chabrol amongst others in this gripping tale of Michel Blanc's growing fascination with his sultry neighbour Sandrine Bonnaire who has never been finer(and that is saying something considering her cv is chock full of memorable portrayals-La Ceremonie and Police to name just two).
Le Parfum D'Yvonne(1994)
Cumbersome mix of comedy and fantasy dilutes some of the charm in this tale of Victor Chmura(Hippolyte giandot) who flees to Switzerland to avoid the Algerian War and meets amongst others a starstruck dreamer Yvonne(Sandra Majani)and fey Rene Meinthe(Jean Pierre Marielle)
Tango(1993)
An acquired taste,Tango is a highly dubious black road comedy about three wife killers(or wannabes)Philip Noiret,Richard Bohringer and Thierry Lhermitte who set off in the commision of a crime and get waylaid at every turn. The three leads are game but this is iffy material and your enjoyment of Tango will be led by your tolerance for the vulgar undertones of the script.
Overall a good representation of Leconte's work with decent prints throughout.Other movies that could be of interest include The Girl on the Bridge(with Mrs Depp Vanessa Paradis),the somber but engrossing La Veuve De Saint-Pierre and my favourite the slight but wonderful The Man On The Train with Jean Rochefort and Johnny Halliday.
