Book Description

12 Aug 2013 The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma
The first volume of this landmark series presents the teachings of the hinayana. The hinayana introduces core Buddhist teachings on the nature of mind, the practice of meditation, the reality of suffering, and the possibility of liberation. It examines the nature of suffering, impermanence, and egolessness, with an emphasis on personal development through meditative discipline and study. The formal entry into the hinayana and the Buddhist path altogether is the refuge vow, in which a student goes for refuge to the Buddha, or the teacher; the dharma, or the teachings; and the sangha, or the community. The hinayana path is based on training in mindfulness and awareness, cultivating virtue, and cutting grasping. Topics covered in detail in this volume include the four noble truths, karma, the four foundations of mindfulness, meditation practice, the refuge vows, the three jewels, the five skandhas, the five precepts, twofold egolessness, and more.

The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma represents meditation master Chögyam Trungpa’s greatest contribution to Western Buddhism. This three-volume collection presents in lively, relevant language the comprehensive teachings of the Tibetan Buddhist path of the hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana. This work will resonate with new students of Buddhism as well as the most senior students.

5.0 out of 5 stars As others have said, invaluable advice for those on the path 9 Aug 2013
By Mark Hazell - Published on
Every year save one from 1973 through 1986 Trungpa Rinpoche spend three months in retreat with gatherings of his students, presenting a detailed overview of the Tibetan Buddhist path. Edited over what seems like decades by a team led by Acharya Judith Lief, the transcripts of the talks given at these Vajradhatu Seminaries are available to the general public for the first time. Acharya Lief and her team have done a masterful job of assembling and organizing these teachings, which provide perhaps the most thorough exposition of the buddhadharma of the modern age. Trungpa Rinpoche dedicated his life to conveying what he had been taught, immersing himself in western culture and using the vernacular to convey even the most subtle aspects of the teachings.

In this first of the three volumes that contain the Profound Treasury, he presents the foundation of the buddhadharma, the basic teachings that inform and infuse not simply the hinayana but the whole of the buddhist path. Virtually a third of the volume is devoted to an extensive commentary on shamatha and vipashyana meditation, the practice of which Trungpa felt was essential if one was to make any sense of the teachings.

These three volumes are a little expensive, but they are worth every penny.

Beautifully edited and organized. Complete without being overwhelming. The source material spans thousands of hours of transcribed talks that can be challenging to access. What an amazing accomplishment representing decades of work. This set is a must have for any serious student of Buddhism in any tradition and a priceless blessing for students of Trungpa Rinpoche.

5.0 out of 5 stars The teachings on meditation practice and the path of discipline that Chögyam Trungpa Rimpoche gave to his students 19 Aug 2013
By Eloy Portillo - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These teachings have been captivating the Shambhala students for decades now. Chögyam Trungpa did his best during the VAJRADHATU SEMINARS, a retreat of three months dedicated to the study of the three circles of the Buddhist teachings: Hinayana or the vehicle of discipline, mahayana or the vehicle of generosity and vajrayana, the vehicle of devotion.

Now these teachings are offered to the open public for the first time after 25 years of the decease of his author. Really a wonderful material for beginners or seasoned meditators in any tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars precious collection of Dharma teachings 27 Jan 2014
By Dakini - Published on

My mother and I are reading aloud together this wonderful series of collected teachings by Chogyam Trungpa. So far, we're still on the Path of Individual Liberation. The book is clear and yet profound; a single chapter has lots to ponder as well as immediately applicable advice on meditation and daily practice. We feel that we are receiving invaluable heart teachings from a master and look forward to reading the entire trilogy and deepening our practice accordingly.
