Product Description

Product Description

Absolutely the most thorough guide to pastel materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with pastels, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills.
Defining the pastel medium broadly--color in stick form to be used for drawing and painting simultaneously--the author creates works of sensuous textures and colors, ranging from subtle to intense. He uses traditional soft and hard pastels, as well as oil pastels and oil sticks, showing the effects produced by each in step-by-step demonstrations. Included are sophisticated ways to combine pastels with water, acrylic, alkyd gels, and oil paint for stunning mixed-media results.

By Mrs. H. V. Minor VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
For any would-be pastelist this book is a must. There is a bewilderment of materials available to the artist and Bill Creevy provides a clear, readable guide through them, from the pastels themselves in all their grades of hardness, softness or irridescence, to oil pastels and oil sticks. Equally useful is the section on Papers and Supports - the variety of papers of differing "tooth" is huge, but if you are not content with what you can buy, Bill Creevy gives tips on making your own canvas panels. Of particular fascination to me is the section on pastels and mixed media, since I had already begun to experiment in this direction but had little idea that so much could be done - using modeling paste with pastels, for example. I looked at a lot of books on pastelling before chosing this one and I'm glad I did.

Essential reading 9 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This was the one of the first pastel books I bought (I now have an extensive library) and it's one of the very best. I find myself returning to it again and again. Few other authors offer the quality and depth of guidance on different types of pastels and supports. The guidance on techniques is also very clear and has excellent illustrations. As a result of reading this book, I started purchasing other books by Watson Guptil in the same vein - all of which have met the same high standards in terms of content and illustration.

A very experienced pastel artist/teacher told me this was one of the best books on contemporary uses of pastels. I read it and I agree! It opened up whole new realms of creativity for me. Creevy gets fascinating textures combining pastels with watercolor, gouache, acrylics, various acrylic mediums, oil pastels, etc. The book is out of date when describing materials. Even though many of the author's paintings don't appeal to me because of their subject matter or composition, I find his textures exquisite. Highly recommended.
