Product Description

This is the eBook version of the printed book.

If you’ve got a love and passion for photography, and a feel for your camera gear and settings, yet your images still fall short–The Passionate Photographer will help you close that disappointing and frustrating gap between the images you thought you took and the images you actually got.

This book will help you determine what you want to say with your photography, then translate those thoughts and feelings into strong images. It is both a source of inspiration and a practical guide, as photographer Steve Simon distills 30 years of photographic obsession into the ten crucial steps every photographer needs to take in order to become great at their passion.

Simon’s practical tips and advice are immediately actionable–designed to accelerate your progress toward becoming the photographer you know you can be. Core concepts include:

- The power of working on personal projects to fuel your passion and vision

- Shooting a large and targeted volume of work, which leads to a technical competence that lets your creativity soar

- Learning to focus your concentration as you shoot, and move outside your comfort zone, past your fears toward the next great image

- Strategies for approaching strangers to create successful portraits

- How to edit your own work and seek second opinions to identify strengths and weaknesses, offering opportunities for growth and improvement with a goal of sharing your work with the world

- The critical need to follow, see, and capture the light around you

Along the way, Simon offers inspiration with “Lessons Learned” culled from his own extensive experience and archive of photojournalism and personal projects, as well as images and stories from acclaimed photographers. If you’re ready to be inspired and challenge yourself to take your photography to the next level, The Passionate Photographer provides ideas and creative solutions to transform that passion into images that convey your unique personal vision.

After the lavish 5-star reviews, I found this book to have some interesting ideas for developing your own photography but ultimately not as good as I hoped. There are useful tips and some really good example photos, but also quite a lot of waffle and a fair number of photos that I thought were not so wonderful. Towards the end there are also too many naked plugs for iPads and various social networks.

This is an exceptionally good book in many respects. Simon is, first and foremost, an excellent photographer and the images in the book are far more exciting and varied than most dedicated collections. The book is, of course, not simply a showcase for Simon's photography, but a discussion of 10 'steps' toward become a great photographer yourself. Unlike most authors of similar books, Simon has helpful insight into the process that an ordinary photographer would need to undergo to truly improve. I'm an amateur photographer, but a professional composer and I found these ten steps to also be deeply thought provoking and, in make cases, inspiring. Not every step translates literally, but any person involved in the creative arts would benefit from thinking through Simon's steps, and observing the way that those steps have played out across his photography over a number of years.

An inspiring read 21 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this as a present for a friend, and after sneaking a look at the first chapter, had to go and buy the ebook, and then spent the rest of the day reading it.

Simon has that rare talent both for photography and writing, and I was sucked in from the first chapter. I found the book pitched pretty well - as a keen photographer with a lot of technical experience, I found that it was less a beginners getting-going guide in photography, and more a means for motivation, and really getting me out there and raising my game. His ten steps were pitched perfectly, and I have already set myself a few projects based on them for the new year.

A lot of photographers books these days seem purely showcases for their images with a small amount of technical information - luckily for this book this isn't the case, and while Simon's images are all really great, it's the writing that shines.

Really inspiring stuff, and worth getting for any serious photographer in your life, whether they are only getting started or a veteran photographer.

The blueprint for a typical Life magazine story required eight types of pictures to ensure photographers came back with a variety of imageryfrom an overall shot, to a medium view, close-up, portrait, a sequence, an action shot, a closer or end shot, and of course, the all-important signature image. Even today, if your photo story contained strong images from these categories, chances are it would be successful. "e;
