Review

"A slow-burn read with a twist in the tail." (Tatler). "Intelligently written and thought-provoking, The Partridge and the Pelican is a truly exhilarating read." (Cambridge Journal).

Product Description

In the summer of 1983, Olivia and Eve find a baby in a phone box beside a country road in Suffolk. The girls are nineteen, on holiday and staying with a young medical student, James. The events of that summer cast a long shadow over their careers, marriages and motherhood. When they meet again 25 years later, the baby in the phone box returns to haunt them, and they are forced to confront the truth that has remained silent all this time. The Partridge and the Pelican explores motherhood, secrets and the enduring ties of friendship.

This is one of the best contemporary novels I have read for many years. The story focuses on two friends - Olivia and Eve - and the relationship between them over the many years of their (troubled) relationship. Many other characters in the novel benefit from the same level of sensitive and subtle characterisation, which gives the novel its depth. An extraordinary event in Olive and Eve's shared past of becomes the historical and figurative reference point for the very familiar, and ordinary, problems and sensitivities of close friendships. I loved this book - it was extremely well written, and very touching.

An author to watch 5 May 2011
By Wendy
Format:Paperback
Past events and a striking, unsettling place haunt this narrative on many levels. The presence of these and other hauntings engage the reader throughout.
There is a deep understanding of the complexities of relationships here, and an acknowledgment that not all fracture lines are reparable; yet, sometimes, small miracles happen.
The penultimate chapter is so surprising and accomplished that I had to return to it as soon as I'd finished the book.
This is an intelligent and rewarding debut novel. I can't wait for the next one.
