Product Description

When Rome transgresses upon his father's domain that lays between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Pacorus, a prince of the Parthian Empire, is sent to exact revenge. After a string of victories Pacorus and his men are captured in Cappadocia, clapped in chains and sent to Italy to live out the rest of their days as slaves. But fate intervenes and Pacorus and his companions are saved from a living hell by a renegade gladiator named Spartacus. In gratitude, Pacorus agrees to help Spartacus build his army as Rome musters its legions to crush the slave uprising. And so begins an epic adventure of glory and savagery played out across the length and breadth of Italy, as Spartacus defeats the armies of Rome and Pacorus leads his horsemen to victory after victory. But will Pacorous and the slave army escape from Italy, and will he win the love of the fierce and proud Gallia before the most powerful man in Rome, Marcus Licinius Crassus, takes the field against Spartacus?

"Darman has researched this novel extremely well, as one would expect with his military non-fiction background. This detail is meshed with great story telling which flows along with great gusto. Less for the fact that this book is about a Parthian rather than a Roman, I would describe it as a ‘Roman Sharpe’. Darman’s style is similar to and as good as Bernard Cornwell’s, one of my favourite authors."
British Army Rumour Service review, June 2011

I am an avid reader of historical fiction and don't normally write reviews as nowadays they all seem to follow the same standard.

However after seeing that there was only 1 review for this book, I felt I had to add my two penceworth as people may be missing the opportunity to read an excellent book.

First things first. This book centers itself around a Parthian, however most of the story is set in Italy, during the uprising of the Spartacus slave revolt. We learn about Spartacus (and Crixus), and how a slave gladiator took on the heart of Rome itself. It is also refreshing to see Rome depicted as the aggressors and that Roman armies, although conquering the known world back then, are not always invincible! Note: This is not a rip off of the tv series!

I would recommend this book to all who love their historical fiction, but especially those who have recently had enough of the bombardment of pro-Roman historical fiction lately!

Not a good read!! 26 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is so clunking it crossed my mind when I was reading it that it could easily have been written by a computer programme. Sentences are constructed in a very mechanical way an example of one is "Standing on top of the hill sat the fort" is it sitting or standing? It is peppered with typos and has unessecarily elaborate descriptions particularly around clothing this becomes even more distracting as its narrated in the first person. Am I really to believe that this warrior prince spends his time considering the fine embroidery of his father's toga.

Yes it has all the elements of a ripping yarn, but it just doesnt work. It is trying to be a Conn Igulden but fails. The dialogue lacks depth, the plot devices have all been seen before, the first five chapters are almost exactly the story of Spartacus.

There is promise here my advice to the author is to rework it into the third person and then proof read.

This is absolute tosh for so many reasons. Luckily for me, Mark and Schlockhorror have covered them all perfectly adequately, so I don't have to. Read their reviews if you are thinking of buying this book, then move on.

Not a bad book but I became increasingly distracted by the errors in the text, it didn't stop me buying the next book though. Let's hope that it has been proof read!

I enjoyed reading this book, it is not in the same league as Cornwell, Scarrow and Iggulden, but then not many are. Read more

Hard read.
I found reading hard work and the story line somewhat disjointed. Maybe I'm hard to please but did not like the style of writing.
