The award-winning, bestselling The Paris Mapguide by Michael Middleditch - the best streetmap on the market

The perfect travelling companion, this clever guide combines illustrated, easy-to-read maps with essential facts to help you get the most out of your trip to Paris.

It's light, and slim enough to slip easily into a pocket or small bag, yet packs in a wealth of invaluable information including detailed listings of everything from museums and galleries to markets and gardens, recommendations on restaurants and night life. Several, more in-depth, articles cover major attractions including The Louvre and Notre Dame and feature useful floor plans. Metro and bus route maps will get you wherever you want to go, and there's even a currency converter to help you sort the antique investments from the flea market bargains.

For many years Michael Middleditch was chief cartographer at Geographia. He created the Mapguides especially for Penguin, and there are four award-winning and highly successful titles in the series: New York, Paris, London and the Map of the World.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 14 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This book is way more than just a map. Having accompanied me on numerous trips to Paris, I can safely say (having tried many alternatives) that this map is an exceptionally trustworthy travel companion and undoubtedly the definitive map to bring to the city of light. This outstanding guide lists all the main streets as well as many alleyways, backstreets, steps, impasses, bridges etc that are nowhere to be found on other maps. It marks all the metro stops, landmarks, supermarkets, celebrated shops, cemeteries, bus routes and general places of interests, and does so without every becoming cluttered or confusing. It also includes detailed maps of the main parks of Paris which I have been unable to find elsewhere.
As well as the main map this book also contains a guide to the attractions of Paris, a metro map and a bus route map. While not as indespensible as the main map, these features are a welcome addition as it helps to be able to cross reference.
To appreciate this book fully you really need it in your hand in a rainy Montparnasse backstreet. Other books may appear attractive on Amazon, but this book really does the job like no other, and when you get a look at the pages you will understand why. Easy to use, readeable, comprehensively indexed, and exceptionally detailed. A MUST BUY for anyone travelling to Paris. (The only criticism I can think of is that it could cover a slightly larger area, including the further out parts of Montmartre and Montparnasse, but for 99% of travellers this won't matter. Other maps don't cover these areas either.)

Absolutely essential to anyone visiting Paris. I will be first in the queue to buy the next edition, but I have used it for over six years (many visits) and it has never let us down. We wouldn't travel there without it! Apart from maps it has history and background, details of entertainments and maps of outlying disticts like the Bois and Versailles, often missing from maps. Pocket sized and informative it also has advice about eating and drinking and helpful maps of the transport system. Many popular hotels are shown on the clear maps. We can't speak too well of this indispensable little book. Go and buy it if you are going to Paris, it'll be your best Paris holiday investment ever. All for under five pounds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear concise informative 17 July 2003
By Nick
(Review is for 2nd edition)
I already had a guide to Paris, and was looking for a compact streetmap covering the main central area. After checking about 4 others in the bookshop, this came well above the rest.
Very clear - the map has metro stops on it, hotels, places of interest, shops etc. It also seems to include more of the smaller street names on it that the others did not.
It has a v clear metro map in it, and also a Noctambus map.
I didnt really look at the guide bit (Restaurants, places of interest, shops etc) but it looks clear and concise.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!!! 19 Oct 2006
I love the series of Mapguides and the one for Paris is no exception.

In a thin, easily portable, pamphlet, is every square inch of Paris, broken down into small sections, one section on a page. The map sections all have a letter and number grid to help you locate streets. There is a comprehensive list of streets and squares in the back of the book.

There is also a metro and a bus map, and essential, brief, information on many sightseeing venues, including Versailles.

The only additional map you would need, and those come free at hotel desks in Paris, is one complete, large, fold-out map that you could open and use to get a city-wide perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity in Paris 28 Feb 2012

This is a must for anyone visiting Paris. The map section is excellent, the index easy to use and the recommendations worth following. I would never be without it and have found myself giving direction to Parisians who have lost their way! It fits into a pocket or handbag and is therefore handy to take out for the day. With Eurostar as cheap and easy as it is, Paris is a prime destination and this guide will make your stay hassle-free particularly if you love walking about as a way of exploring. I tend to investigate one area each time I go and the map in this booklet is sufficiently detailed to need no other. The booklet consists mostly of maps which are a decent scale and clear, showing the arrondissements and places of interest. There is a good Metro map, a brief history of the city and outline maps of buildings such as the Louvre and Notre Dame. I bought two of them in fear it would go out of print. (It is worth checking on opening hours of galleries etc before visiting just to be sure they haven't changed.)

5.0 out of 5 stars No better way to discover Paris 16 Feb 2010
By Lyndley
There are lots of maps of Paris available but few are as good as this. We have used both 1st and 2nd editions (there is now a 4th: ISBN 9780141469041 published in 2008) on many trips. It fits easily into a handbag or satchel and has bigger print than most (for over 50s this is great).
There is a very clear map of the Metro lines and the Noctambus (Buses beteen 1 am & 5.30 am) based on the ones used by Parisians.
Other features include an introduction to and history of Paris, a diagram of the arrondissements giving location of town halls by map index, and layouts of Notre Dame and the Louvre with descriptions. Also included is an alphabetical list of museums and art galleries with descriptions, map co-ordinates and opening hours. There are two pages listing Other Places of Interest with descriptions etc as above, and a page each listing Churches of Interest, and Shopping Destinations such as department stores (les grands magasins), antiques centres and markets with opening hours etc. These are followed by information on popular nightspots, famous restaurants, cafes and bars and includes lists of the main tourist offices and emergency addresses and phone numbers. There are contacts for lost property, instructions on making long distance calls and banking hours. Metro, bus, taxi, Bateaux Mouche and Paris' canal boat general information is provided. At the end of the map section, there are lists, descriptions and co-ordinates for Parks and Gardens, Sports areas, and more detailed maps and descritpions of the Bois de Boulogne, the Bois de Vincennes and Versailles. The Entertainments page recommends buying Pariscope for event listings and lists concert halls, opera and ballet venues, ticket agencies, theatres and a few cinemas.
