Product Description

Synopsis

A crime novel about a London gangland boss who feels there must be more to life. He decides to rob one more bank to get enough money to make a new life for himself, far away. However the bank is on the island of Madeira where his arch-enemy, Inspector Gower, is enjoying the sunshine. From the author of THE SALTON KILLINGS and THE SILENT LAND.

From the Author

The story of an apparently impossible robbery
"Islands are rarely conducive to major crime, if only because the getaway is too difficult." Berlitz Travel Guide to Madeira.

Frank Mason is a bank robber with a kind heart and enough troubles to last him a lifetime. His marriage is a disaster, but he dare not leave his wife, Doris, for fear of what his gangster father-in-law, Ted Sims, might do to him. His mistress, Linda, is becoming more and more demanding. The money from the last robbery is running out and he dreads the thought of the next one - and the long prison sentence he will recieve if he is caught.

The only way out is to pull one last job which will give him enough money to retire on. His target is a bank on the island of Madeira, and his plan of escape is so crazy that it just might work. But what Frank does not realise is that his old enemy, Chief Superintendent Gower, already has some knowledge of the job - and that some of his own gang are planning a fiendish double-cross! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Better Than Inspector Woodend 24 Jan 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I liked this one much better than the Inspector Charlie Woodend books. Interesting story that keeps moving with out endless interview with the suspects. All-in-all it's a good read. Too bad it is out of print.
Five stars for all the plot twists 18 Mar 2011
By S. Saunders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed this crime novel more than I expected to. I've been reading several of this author's police procedurals lately. This isn't one of her Charlie Woodend series. Sometimes a series author produces a disappointing stand-alone novel, but this one did not disappoint.

The plot hangs on a London career criminal's plan to rob one last bank, and sail off into the sunset with his luscious sexy mistress, leaving his wife behind. But of course, nothing is simple, nobody (well, almost nobody) is a complete fool although many characters are deeply flawed, and everybody has his or her own agenda. I won't say if there were double crosses, or triple crosses, but will say that the twists and turns kept on coming until the very end.

I found some of the characters memorable, and was amused by the plot theme involving a man who married the boss's daughter, and went on to achieve his own success, but still is subject to the old man's power. And beholden to his wife (the boss's daughter) who has been the brains behind his own success. And all of that happened in the world of crime instead of commerce, industry or finance.
