The part played by the many German and Austrian royal families in opposing Hitler has hitherto been overlooked. Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia was deeply involved in the German resistance movement and was questioned by the Gestapo following the 20 July plot on Hitler's life; Otto von Habsburg, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was sentenced to death and escaped through Europe to America, where he helped coordinate attempts to liberate his homeland; his Hohenberg cousins (children of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand) were incarcerated in Dachau; Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria was exiled to Italy where he was pursued by the SS - his wife and children were captured and sent to concentration camps; the exiled Prince Hubertus zu Lowenstein travelled between the USA and Britain assembling German exiles into groups representing the real Germany - that could assume power when Hitler was defeated. The sweeping away of German and Austrian monarchs in 1918 made the rise of Hitler possible; their successors helped make possible his defeat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book 7 May 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was extremely disappointed. More than half the book is on the background of the Nazi regime. The author explains this is necessary to understand the subject. If you buy a book like this you know about the subject. When he finally comes to the subject of the book it is extremely disappointing nothing new here except trying to build up the role of Prince Louis-Ferdinand of Prussia of whom the author is obviously a fan. Why then when I look it up in my library on the German history is he never mentioned in any indexes. Quite right because he played no role in the German resistance.
It is full of mistakes just to mention two the first modern Norwegian King Haakon was NOT a brother to the King of Sweden but to the King of Denmark. Prince Bernard Von Lippe Biesterfeld was not Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands her husband but her son-in-law. If things like that so easily looked up in any genealogy book are mistaken what about the other facts in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and fascinating account 16 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A fascinating and uniquely comprehensive insight into the tumultuous events that led up to the second world war and the people, who bravely opposed Hitler. The two sections into which the book is divided make complete sense, as the first is a detailed investigation into the many interconnected events, not just in Germany, but in America, Britain, France and Europe generally that contributed to the awful cataclysm of the 2nd World War. Frank Millard goes into the various and surprising origins of Social Darwinism and Eugenics, (not just a German disease, but prevalent across Europe and America also,) and details many first hand accounts of people, who met Hitler and were appalled at what they found. The exciting pace of this first section, with its stories of generals, commanders and royalty, who pleaded with Britain and America to help them to unseat Hitler, makes you want to know 'what happens next', even though we all know that the end result was the tragedy of war. The second sections covers many crown princes and monarchs, not just of Germany, but of other countries in Europe as well, whose moral authority was immense and whose royal defiance played an important role in undermining the authority of the dictator. Many of them were influential in helping to safety the Jewish people of their nation, and played key roles in trying to raise support in America. This fascinating account, the first book published on such a broad subject, puts together material from many different sources, including interviews with and information from the royal families concerned. Some beautiful turns of phrase and thought provoking ideas leaves the reader pondering the protagonists of this well-researched book for a long time and leaves one to draw frightening parallels with modern day economic and political turmoil.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and well researched body of work. 4 July 2012
Format:Hardcover
I am not an historian or an academic by any stretch of the imagination. Far from it! However, I am a visual artist and a writer and as such I have the ability to grasp the content of others' work instinctively and without prejudice. I found Frank Millard's book 'The Palace And The Bunker' to be a very well written and excellently presented body of work. He has obviously done a massive amount of research on his chosen subject, and for me personally it matters not a jot whether his collated information came from long hours spent trawling the Internet or days and weeks poring over the written word on paper in the British Library or wherever.Every source is equally as valid and important. To me it's the end product that is vital and not the journey.

Above all the book reads well. And in these days of easy and speedy communication that is a definite plus. There is a very impressive list of those who contributed to Mr Millard's body of work in the opening pages of his book and I think this says a great deal about his dedication to his subject matter. As a layman I found his writing to be energetic, constantly informative and above all interesting.

I hope in years to come that this book may be accepted as part of the curriculum for those studying 20th Century history at school and at college. It has none of the sterile stuffiness that dissuaded teenagers like myself from pursuing subjects such as these when we were young and hungry to learn and absorb information.I strongly recommend Mr Millard's book as a valid and important source of information about the cumulative events that led to the most cataclysmic and profoundly destructive event of the last Century.
