1688. Beth Ambrose has led a sheltered life within Merryfields, her family home on the outskirts of London; a place where her parents provide a sanctuary for melancholic souls. A passionate and gifted artist, Beth shares a close bond with Johannes the painter, who nurtures her talents and takes her on as his apprentice.

But as political tensions begin to rise in the capital, Noah Leyton arrives at her family home in the middle of the night with a proposition that turns Beth's world upside down. And when Merryfields becomes refuge to a mysterious new guest, whose connections provide an opportunity for Beth to fulfil her artistic ambitions, she soon realises that it comes at a price . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars A natural continuation of previous work 7 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having stepped out of my normal genre and read "The Apothecary's Daughter" and loved it, I was very happy to see that Charlotte Betts had another book out so soon.

As ever, the author has a beautifully descriptive style that really pulls you into the scene, you feel as much at home with the surroundings as the characters do. It's nice that there are some familiar characters from the first book, but this story is definitely stand-alone, the Fire of London a distant memory, now it's political and religious instability that looms large. This is a part of English history I hadn't studied since school and it felt very natural and real to be reading about in the background to the main story, that of the journey of Beth, from sheltered country girl to an independent woman of the world with her horizons definitely set far beyond the walls of the garden of her parent's home.

A great character driven story with a sumptuous background of history.

I read this after reading the Apothecary's Daughter(another amazing read) and would recommend that if at all possible you read that book first as it has a number of the same characters in and is set slightly later.

Having absolutely loved The Apothecary's Daughter, I was rather disappointed with this one. It was just too long. I was also uncomfortable with the 1st cousin aspect of it.
