Product Description

The devastating truth of the war in the Pacific.

Individual stories of heroism and courage are explored in the exact spots where the Pacific theatre of war took place, as young soldiers took on the seemingly invincible and increasingly desperate Japanese army in a series of bitter and hard-fought battles. From Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan to Guam, Leyte, Okinawa and Iwo Jima, using rare archival footage, cutting-edge CGI and interviews with the soldiers who survived, the stories of some of WWII’s most ferocious attacks, climactic battles and ultimate victories vividly come to life.

Also includes a bonus disc – Sledgehammer Old Breed Marine, the true story of Private Eugene B. Sledge, U.S. Marine Corps.

• Sledge’s memoirs have been immortalised forever as the inspiration for HBO’s critically acclaimed mini-series The Pacific but the bonus disc tells true story of Private Sledge’s war in the Pacific from the man himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars aka the lost evidence 23 Oct 2010

I bought this boxset without knowing really what was in it, in fact its a collection of the lost evidence series shown on the military channel which is a good thing, The programme uses cgi reconstructions re-enacters and original footage combined with first hand accounts to tell the story of the pacific campaign through the various island battles. My only moan is that one is missing the one about peleliu a shame yes but a good set of programmes if you are interested in that period.

Packaging good. The product met my expectations and in some cases beyond my expectations.
It's a shame AMAZON doesn't pay any taxes in this country thereby contributing to this countrys' growth which in turn helps the low paid and needy people. SHAME ON YOU!

5.0 out of 5 stars War at its dirtiest 28 Dec 2010
After watching this brilliant series it shows as to how men can be turned into those who have to forget the vast majority of their humane side, whilst fighting an enemy that would rather die than surrender even when severely wounded.
Once again Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have found the secret in showing to the world something of how World War 2 was fought, but this time it is the war in the Pacific against the Japanese. This war was fought between two very different cultures, and the series has managed to capture the way that war was at its most brutal, with the fighting being what must have been some of the worst ever seen during the course of World War 2.
This is the actual story of some of the men that were actually involved in what were some of the most horrendous battles, and shows those who weren't there as to just how much these men had to suffer not only physically but mentally.
Fighting not only an enemy that showed no mercy to their opponents, but also in weather and terrain conditions that were often as brutal to live in, never mind having to fight a war in at the same time.
This is a really brilliant series that manages to outstrip the brilliant Band of Brothers series that covered part of the American part in the war that was fought in Europe, and shows how the fighting in the Pacific was a war that was fought with very few of the Geneva Conventions regulations being observed by both sides at times. There are some parts of the series that will make those watching it wonder as to how men coped in what was trully a fight to the death against their Japanese opponents, and the story of those who served in the United States Marine Corp shows as to the courage with which men fought.
