5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for basic stuff 20 July 2010
Format:Misc. Supplies|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this shortly after moving to Spain as I wanted something durable and light that I could take with me when out and about. I fully realised before buying it that it wasn't going to be something I would use for in-depth study. But, if you want something that will translate most everyday words this is excellent for its size and price. I have used it hundreds of times when out shopping and I also use it extensively when watching the news on television. It is really useful for translating words on the television text that are new to me as almost invariably this dictionary has the translation of the word. It's so easy to pop it into a bag when you are heading out and it is also very convenient to have beside the television.

At the very beginning I found it invaluable when, for example, I was in the supermarket looking at the huge array of Spanish food. It rarely left me down. After a while I became familiar with the vocabulary so I don't use it for shopping as much. But I still use it a fair amount for watching news programmes.

Another useful thing - again in the context of shopping is the conversion charts. Very handy e.g. when you are looking at shoes and you want to know immediately what a UK size ten is in Spanish shoe stores.

Finally, the cover is made of very durable flexible plastic. I have had it for a few years now and it's almost as good as new.

Overall, excellent value for money and ideal for getting to grips with the basic Spanish terms for those new to the language.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well laid out but poorly edited 17 July 2006
By Rob M
Format:Misc. Supplies
I bought this dictionary thinking it would be adequate for beginner level. Only 18 weeks into my course I'm already finding it insufficient.

Inevitably, due to its size, there is going to be a limit on the amount of information it can contain but a lot of the problem is due to poor editing. For example, when I look up verb 'salgo', it rightly directs me to the infinitive, 'salir'. The only problem is they've forgotten to put an entry in for 'salir'. This is not the only instance where common words are absent and I wonder whether this dictionary is being sold on reputation rather than quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful as a supplement to a bigger dictionary 29 April 2003
Format:Paperback
This isn't a phrase book, or a dictionary for beginners, so it isn't really what you want if you're a tourist visiting a Spanish speaking country.

However, if you use Spanish at work, or are learning Spanish and you need a dictionary I recommend having a larger dictionary for reference when at home/in school/in the office and get this one for when you want to travel light. It's invaluable for finding out what that annoying little word is, but it's too small to rely upon for heavy usage, such as writing reports or doing homework.
