Product Description

Product Description

A guide to Oxford, as shown through the cameras of the makers of the Inspector Morse series. This much-loved series used as its backdrop the sweet city of dreaming spires , but revealed this ancient city in more than its traditional light. The celebrated university buildings are there, but as a setting for crimes committed by corrupt academics, the Gown. The other side of Oxford was portrayed, the Town and the countryside around, with its equally devious criminals. Grappling with them, and with growing technology, was an old-fashioned improbable sleuth, modern only in his lack of deference for his superiors. This new edition, updated with new material to include locations for the recent production of 'Lewis', is a must-read for all Morse lovers, as well as providing much to interest and inspire locals and tourists alike.

Poorly researched 16 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
As a native of Oxford and keen Morse fan, I was very disappointed with this book. Many episodes are dismissed in a few lines, and many of the locations given are inaccurate, as are some of the plot summaries. A good idea, but poorly executed.

I bought this book as an Inspector Morse fanatic before setting off to visit Oxford for the first time. The book is very detailed and gives a comprehensive breakdown of the locations used in the Morse episodes. It also covers the first series of 'Lewis' for Morse fans that persisted with the spin-off series. The book doesn't just concentrate on the city centre, it also gives you a guide to the locations used in filming outside Oxford. My only criticism is that there are no maps of the locations used outside of the immediate city (e.g. Wolvercote, Marston) which would have been helpful, although we did have fun trying to find the remote pub used in the sunset scene of the Remorseful Day!

Even if you are not planning to visit Oxford and re-trace the steps of Morse of Lewis, it is a great book to read for any armchair fans of the greatest Chief Inspector who has graced our television screens.

The first edition of Bill Leonard's book was a fascinating and exhaustive guide to Oxford locations seen in the classic TV detective drama Inspector Morse, sadly spoiled by too many typographical errors. Happily, this new edition is a vast improvement. Reformatted to handy, pocket-sized shape, it has been redesigned, updated and much corrected. The result is an indispensable guide to the home of Morse and Lewis.
