Review

"Fascinating...a comprehensive history of the wars."--History Today

"In 1095, Pope Urban II granted absolutions to whomever would reclaim the Holy Land for Christendom. With that assurance began two centuries of Crusades, and the story...is well treated in this interpretation of the movement to take up the cross."--Booklist

"In a series of finely crafted and admirably succinct essays, the contributors unravel a number of important medieval political and religious themes. This comprehensive approach adds a great deal to the book's interest and presents some of the best insights of modern Crusading scholarship....Excellent."--Tablet

"The great merit of Professor Riley-Smith's book is to follow the story down to the present day."--Church Times

"In 1095 Pope Urban II granted absolutions to whomever would reclaim the Holy Land for Christendom. With that assurance began two centuries of Crusades, and the story, in contemporary chronicles, artwork, and castellated ruins, is well treated in this interpretation of the movement to take up the cross."--Booklist

This is a very important book for people who want to know the facts without stories of romance and chivalry. It is very well organized with chapters dedicated to all the aspects of life from the time of the Crusades, aspects ranging from the military orders in various periods of time to the evolution of crusading literature. I recommend this book for people who need an overview of the period of the Crusades. It is also advisable, in order to comprehend the whole picture of the Crusades, to read opinions from the Muslim side. A very good book in this region is "Arab Historians of the Crusades" (The Islamic World Series) by Francesco Gabrieli.

This is an excellently organized and well illustrated book written with a general readership in mind. It summarises current opinions and supplements Sir Steven Runciman's classic history of the Crusades. The writers have made the most of original administrative, literary and legal documents. The chapters on Crusader's Songs and on the image of the crusades in modern times are of particular interest.

The book is well worth reading however the quality of the binding is questionable. Several pages have come away and are now loose. Still worth buying though
