A compulsive read! 1 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As somebody who has struggled my whole life with issues of weight, I found Marion Woodman's insights very helpful. The individual case studies were extremely honest and touched on many of the issues and emotions that have plagued my own life, allowing me to realise for the first time that problems with weight and alienation from the feminine are linked. Although not a comfortable read it was compulsive and I would recommend it to anyone struggling with obesity.

An intelligent and thoroughly thought out book which really made me think further about my relationship with food and my life experiences in a way that counselling and the more superficial self help books have not. I started to see that my role models of the feminine were not so strong and that this is at the root of many eating disorders. I would think that this book is very helpful as a text for psychology students but for one who suffers from an eating disorder its the first book which has really made me explore the depths of my condition and think about what I could do next rather than feel trapped ina cycle and blame my 'laziness' for not being able to 'snap out of it!' Heavy going in places but worth the effort if you are after insight

As woman, who constantly struggles with weight issues, and the shadow of a negative mother,I can safely say that reading this book helped me realise the very root of my problems. Beautifully written with lots of relevant references to art literature and mythology, it paints the picture of it's main heroine- a woman rejecting her feminine self.Trough a substantial amount of case studies, and interviews with her patients, the author explains the viscous circle of emotional self-harm.Obsessive relationships with food, being merely the symptoms of a deeper emotional dysfunctions.Marion Woodman answers the questions relating to women's bodies and the perception of those in the context of culture and history. It is not an easy read, but extremely worthwhile of one's time.
