5.0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE MUST!! 9 Jan 2003
By Ellie
Format:Audio CD
I would never normally buy this kind of music...although I am open to anything new, and claim to love all styles of music. When listening to the first track, I wanted to don my dancing gear and boogie away. It gets your attention, and makes you want to hear more. The bass line is awesome, and the percussion/drums are excellent. Jack sounds like he could be any Joe Bloggs off the street - obviously with unlimited talent (which makes him a bit different!!) - so the listener can easily identify him. None of this pretentious 'let's talk about love' malarky, Jack gets down to the nitty gritty (he's a secret lemonade drinker y'know?!). Each song is as good as the last - a stonking album that you can play again and again. Good sound production, good vocals (a beautiful female voice occasionally graces us with her presence), good topics, good lyrics, a tight sound. The band work very well together, producing the most FABULOUS album. Don't waste any time - get your copy today and help Jack rise to the fame he deserves!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously cool stuff! 4 Jun 2004
Format:Audio CD
Basically a chilled out version of The Streets however I doubt the artist would thank me for saying that. If you like chill out music but also the style of The Streets then this is for you, go on, give it a go!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 2 Nov 2003
By Lyndon
Format:Audio CD
I went to Leeds festival this year and in my drunken state wondered into the dance tent. Not being a big dance fan i was suprised to like what was playing, a group id never heard of called Just Jack. On closer listen i thought i was in the wrong place, in an urban, Streets like stage listening to a band that should have been graced with the credit they deserved and been on the main stage or atleast the Radio 1 stage the music is a blend of urban, dance and mellow chill out, and bloddy great it was 2, why was nobody listenin then???i had just arrived and was up against the railings, the tent was empty. Enuf of that anyway.the music is cool, its got a dated feel to it, in a good way that is. The lyrics are cool, phrases like 'She told me people came here to get drunk before they died'. The music is good, ok not the best thing ever but that is not to be expected for a groups first album. Jack Allsop deserves to get his name known and with tracks like Paradise lost and found deserves to go into the charts.
The album is in some parts samey, i.e very blur from last to next but this is not bad, its all very good infact and there isnt a track i dislike.
It is certainly worth listnin to and helpin to get there name known, the lad can sing well as can the woman who graces the occasional track with her silky voice, are great
I would reccomend it, it hasnt been out of my player since last week!
Its not as heavy as the Streets although thats the nearest comparison, its more chillout than them.
In a nutshell, buy, its worth a listen if not for track 8 alone, if u wanna chill out and vibe BUY!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wowzers! 10 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I was introduced to Just Jack by, believe it or not, the TV show Holby City. A really cool version of 'Snowflakes' (which I can't track down anywhere, much to my regret) played over the closing scenes and made me sit up and listen. A quick internet search revealed the artist behind the genius and before long a copy of 'the Outer Marker' was winging its way to my house.
I wouldn't normally go for this kind of music in a million years - I'm more of an indie kid myself - but there was just something really haunting about 'Snowflakes' that I loved.
Boy, that album had to be one of my best buys that year. Totally chilled in places (Paradise Lost and Found), great slower tracks (Ain't Too Sad) and the mother of all tunes to dance along to - Triple Tone Eyes.
This CD has become one of my most cherished, and I think its a crying shame that Jack doesn't get more recognition for his great music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hints of a bright future 21 May 2009
Format:Audio CD
Just Jack's first release shows signs of the potential that would be realised on the fantastic follow-up 'Overtones'. However, this album is altogether too uneven in tone and the lyrics too brash for Jack's musical style. Opening track 'Let's Get Really Honest' showcases Jack's lackadaisical vocals over a fairly minmial musical base, whilst 'Snowflakes' is a beautiful and poignant track and the highlight of the album. The remainder of the album is pretty average but if you want to experience Jack's piece de resistance then leave this and get 'Overtones' instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Jack is insanely amazing! 7 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
i first decided to look up 'just jack' and buy the album 'the outer marker' after listening to it in a friends car and totally enjoyed it on the first listen.
It isn't a grow no you album nor is it a few tracks are good album but the rest suck, it blew me away and now im hooked on it.
This album is really mellow and easy listening, there are some great beats in it and the raw londoner's accent is unreal.
My favourite tracks include, 'Paradise', 'Snowflakes', well nearly all of them actually.
Just Jack is a much more chilled version of the streets, talking about everyday life and not over exadgerating on certain subjects but keeping it widly spread.
Just Jack is definatly one to buy i really recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars It'll loosen your mind like a syrup of figs 29 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Bought on the back of reading some ecstatic reviews and Jack's own assessment that he was like The Streets but with much better music I was expecting more. In fact, though I agree the Streets stuff can be tiresomely heavy, I find it effortlessly engaging and infinitely preferable to this rather placid offering. On first listen, in fact, I wondered if the whole thing wasn't just a manufactured record company response to mainstream urban music. On balance though I do think there is some real inspiration here, albeit buried under too much reverence for the heavily-worn influences, and the first three tracks are good enough to attract wider attention. However, this is all still a bit MOR and the individuality I've seen trumpeted elsewhere is really little more than bluster: the lyrics only occasionally rise above asking "do you count the flakes when it snows?" (no, I don't) and the music is definitely not at the advertised Massive Attack levels of complexity.
If the talent on show here is truly original then we have something very promising to look forward to. Despite my reservations, I applaud the fact that this album is trying something new and I recommend that at least you have a listen.
