Neil Simon's curious comedy The Out-of-Towners concerns a pair of non-New Yorkers (Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis) having a hellish visit to the Big Apple on the eve of a job interview for Lemmon's character. Made in 1970 and directed by Arthur (Love Story) Hiller, this hectic film almost seems ahead of its time when compared to more recent misery-piled-on-misery comedies such as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The couple in this film endure everything that can go wrong on a trip, including being forced to spend the night in a mugger-happy Central Park. The strange element in Simon's script, though, is that Lemmon's character is so unpleasant. A middle-class, uptight guy who can't believe that New Yorkers in the service profession don't perform their jobs slavishly, he's kind of a one-note joke that quickly wears thin. It was remade with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in 1999. --Tom Keogh

George has a special night planned for Gwen before the big meeting the next morning. It consist of a dinner-and-dessert for two, then dancing, and finally back to their luxurious hotel suite at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It seems like the perfect getaway vacation...until it takes a turn for the worse. Bad things stars to arise: The plane is rerouted to Boston's Logan International Airport; They hop on a cattle-style crowded train to Grand Central, with extreme shortage of food; Upon arrival, the entire New York City Transit Authority, the local cab company, and the Sanitation Dept. are on strike; A heavy thunderstorm drenches George and Gwen; The hotel gave away their room; George and Gwen get mugged twice and kidnapped (in a NYPD squad car). It's then that George is not taking this lying down anymore and threatens to sue everybody that never gave them a chance. Someway, the 'Big Apple Pie' can taste very sour for the 'Ou...The Out of Towners ( The Out-of-Towners )

5.0 out of 5 stars no strike on walking 29 Feb 2008
By stephen
Format:DVD
IF you are fed up of the endless comedies that hollywood churn out nowadays, then this movie is highly recommended. I was born after this movie was made and it says a lot that i have to go back to find the quality of comedy that is sorely lacking at present. Jack lemmon must get to a job interview in NewYork, but on the way is held up by an endless list of events which are hilarious and brilliantly thought out.

Very few actors aside from Lemmon could have played this role so well, and every scene he portrays every emotion known. He is amusing, hysterical and embarrassing all at the same time. Any fans of hold the front page, the odd couple etc will really enjoy this. Their is a remake, but this original version is far superior.

Lemmon is superb and a real tour de force constantly threatening to sue people with his lawyer. Also Sandy Dennis as his wife is the perfect foil to lemmon. The situations they find themselves in are funny and vary from strikes to being mugged by a con man. The script is tight and lemmon delivers his lines with savage wit and frustration of a man who must get to that interview, classic comedy and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars lemmon at his best 19 July 2011
Format:DVD
This film is a total bargain, Jack Lemmon at his best in a neil simon comedy, I had to stop it sometimes to hear the next gag as I was laughing so much. I love films set in New york and this is one of the best, I love also the way it's filmed it feels so real to me. Don't want to give too much away but jack lemmon's character george kellerman goes for a promotional interview in new york taking his wife gwen(sandy dennis) who was fantastic as the wife, they come across so many mishaps when there plane get's diverted and they have to get a train to new york to make the deadline. It's hilarious. I'm saving this for christmas to watch again with all my family. Jack Lemmon was the master of this type of comedy. I loved it.

The wifes favourite film watched many times. This sort of humour has long gone. Jack Lemon mastered the dead pan look to a tee.

Jack Lemmon. What else do you need in a comedy film? The man is just a joy to watch in any of his films though in this effort, you kind of get the feeling that he alone is carrying... Read more
