Neil Simon's curious comedy The Out-of-Towners concerns a pair of non-New Yorkers (Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis) having a hellish visit to the Big Apple on the eve of a job interview for Lemmon's character. Made in 1970 and directed by Arthur (Love Story) Hiller, this hectic film almost seems ahead of its time when compared to more recent misery-piled-on-misery comedies such as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The couple in this film endure everything that can go wrong on a trip, including being forced to spend the night in a mugger-happy Central Park. The strange element in Simon's script, though, is that Lemmon's character is so unpleasant. A middle-class, uptight guy who can't believe that New Yorkers in the service profession don't perform their jobs slavishly, he's kind of a one-note joke that quickly wears thin. It was remade with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in 1999. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Neil Simon's comedy of mishaps follows a couple as they travel to New York for a job interview. Their plane is forced to land in Phi ladelphia, they nearly miss a train to NY, which turns out to be standing room only, they arrive in New York in the middle of a mass -transit strike, they have to walk several blocks in the rain to get to their hotel, which has given away their room because of thei r late arrival. That's where the trouble really begins. A series of comedic disasters follow that might make one think twice befor e visiting The Big Apple.

5.0 out of 5 stars no strike on walking 29 Feb 2008
By stephen
IF you are fed up of the endless comedies that hollywood churn out nowadays, then this movie is highly recommended. I was born after this movie was made and it says a lot that i have to go back to find the quality of comedy that is sorely lacking at present. Jack lemmon must get to a job interview in NewYork, but on the way is held up by an endless list of events which are hilarious and brilliantly thought out.

Very few actors aside from Lemmon could have played this role so well, and every scene he portrays every emotion known. He is amusing, hysterical and embarrassing all at the same time. Any fans of hold the front page, the odd couple etc will really enjoy this. Their is a remake, but this original version is far superior.

Lemmon is superb and a real tour de force constantly threatening to sue people with his lawyer. Also Sandy Dennis as his wife is the perfect foil to lemmon. The situations they find themselves in are funny and vary from strikes to being mugged by a con man. The script is tight and lemmon delivers his lines with savage wit and frustration of a man who must get to that interview, classic comedy and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars lemmon at his best 19 July 2011
This film is a total bargain, Jack Lemmon at his best in a neil simon comedy, I had to stop it sometimes to hear the next gag as I was laughing so much. I love films set in New york and this is one of the best, I love also the way it's filmed it feels so real to me. Don't want to give too much away but jack lemmon's character george kellerman goes for a promotional interview in new york taking his wife gwen(sandy dennis) who was fantastic as the wife, they come across so many mishaps when there plane get's diverted and they have to get a train to new york to make the deadline. It's hilarious. I'm saving this for christmas to watch again with all my family. Jack Lemmon was the master of this type of comedy. I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ever had one of those days? 13 Aug 2010
Jack Lemmon. What else do you need in a comedy film? The man is just a joy to watch in any of his films though in this effort, you kind of get the feeling that he alone is carrying the film. Sandy Dennis is capable if not extended and I was feeling that from her there should have been more, she has a very passive role in this Lemmon tour de force. If he had more support in this film I would have been tempted to give 5 stars, but his ability alone to make an otherwise average film enjoyable is enough to extend that to 4 stars. Not quite as good The Odd Couple gem, but still well worth having, this a great addition to the Jack Lemmon canon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, Never laughed so much. 11 May 2008
This film, is, without doubt, one of the funniest films your ever likely to see, and my all time favourite. it is absolutely flawlessly brilliant. I cant recommend it highly enough. It leaves so many so called comedies far back in the shade, and nothing much even comes close. It really doesn't come much better than this. and is a must buy.

This is a fast paced comedy, with so many twists and turns it will make you dizzy. a great story, with laughs from start to finish.

Written by genius playwright, 'NEIL SIMON,' ( The odd couple/ the sunshine boys) ect. how he comes up with such great original comedy, I kept asking myself throughout the film.

The story is of a couple, the 'Kellermans', superbly acted by, the ever nuerotic, Jack Lemmon', and his dizzy long suffering wife, played by 'Sandy Dennis'. The Kellermans, from suburban Twin Oaks Ohio, plan, is to travel to NewYork as mr Kellerman has an interview appointment, with promotion prospects. Sounds simple?. far from it. and I thought I had problems. As everything on the journy goes wrong.

Hold tight to your seatbelts folks, and prepair for a whirlwind ride, of pure, hilarious mayhem, and, catastrophe, that pushes the boundaries of human endurance for the poor frustrated, ill fated Kellermans, when, they are subjected to,everything from losing their Luggage. catching the wrong train, being mugged, caught in the rain, and, being involved in an anti Cuban riot, amongst other highly stressful but, hilarious situations.

I know its only a story, but, the acting is so good, I started to feel the anx and fustration, with all the mishaps myself, that would have left me reaching for a tranquilizer if id had any.

5.0 out of 5 stars The tears just kept on rolling! 24 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I accidentily came upon this treasure of comical past, fleeing from a football match on the other channel. I have never been so glad to have hated football so much in all my life as it gave me opportunity to witness a comic masterpiece. The hilarious situations this married couple find themselves in, no wonder its a classic! Buy it, watch it, and chuckle histerically until you turn blue!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this, forget the remake 31 Oct 2006
Still a hilariously funny film and one of the classic 'everything that can go wrong, does go wrong' movies.

It's aged really well, and is superior to the 1999 remake (with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn) in many ways. The photography captures the mood of each scene, and really gets across just how small George and Gwen feel in this towering city. They face far more problems than in the remake too, creating an even greater sense of dispair and farce. Perhaps most important, Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis portray genuinely nice people, which I just didn't feel in the remake where Steve Martin's George is much 'angrier'. You watch and while you're laughing, really feel for them at the same time. I found myself willing them along, and if you've had to travel to foreign cities much you'll watch with a real empathy - there but for the grace of God...
