I first read the novel "The Other Garden" many years ago, and re-read it more recently, when it had gone out of print, unfortunately, as I have recommended it to others who will now be able to obtain it.
The Other Garden won the Whitbread First Novel award and deservedly so. It tells the story of an unusual friendship between an adolescent boy in a Wiltshire village and his older friend, Kay, who is unconventional and fascinating. Set against the backdrop of the Second World War it captures beautifully the atmosphere and effect on everyday life of that period and the nearby American base. This is a beautifully written story, and if the others are anything like as good, it will be well worth the money.
