An extensively commentated compilation of all important compositions and even self-performed tracks by Ernie Maresca. Maresca was one the most important songwriters in New York in the early sixties and wrote major hits for Dion & The Belmonts, Reparata & The Delrons, The Chiffons and other US artist. This CD summarizes his work for first time, including previously unreleased demos and many other rare tracks, which were performed mostly by vocal groups. For every Doo Wop fan and pop collector a must!

Shout, shout etc was the hit which did not happen. This guy had versatility and a decent voice. A good listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A better writer than singer 25 Feb 2011
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
The name of Ernie Maresca had appeared on singles from 1961 as a writer but in 1962 he became a recording artist in his own right scoring one chart hit with Shout Shout.Really Maresca was no more than a demo maker for such as Dion or the Regents
With its Gary U S Bonds influence it was a typical example of 1962 U S pop music with doowop stylings
The strong use of vocal groups is almost incestuous and carried on the tradition of white doowop further than most critics imagine
By 1965 his hit streak had more or less run out with the later Dion singles though Maresca songs would carry on into the 70s with no effect from the British Invasion
Ace have also issued the sole Maresca album which came out after the hit single.
The detailed sleeve notes make this a worthwhile purchase

4.0 out of 5 stars A One-Hit Wonder With A Difference 2 Aug 2007
By AvidOldiesCollector - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When Ernie Maresca scored with Shout Shout (Knock Yourself Out) in May of 1962 (# 6 Billboard Hot 100/# 25 R&B) (b/w Crying Like A Baby Over You) little did he realize that that was to be it insofar as charted singles were concerned.

But unlike some one-hit wonders Maresca, born in the Bronx on April 21, 1939, had other talents that would stand him in good stead. He could write a pretty good tune and, prior to his hit, had already proven that with No One Knows, a # 12 R&B/# 19 Top 100 Pop hit for Dion & The Belmonts in 1958 and Runaround Sue, a # 1 Hot 100/# 4 R&B for Dion in 1961.

By that time Dion had left The Belmonts and was backed by The Del-Satins, the same group that backed Maresca on his only hit. It was also in 1962 that Dion would take another Maresca song, The Wanderer, to # 2 Hot 100 (again backed by The Del-Satins), that The Belmonts would have a # 28 Hot 100 with his Come On Little Girl, and The Regents would score with his Runaround (# 28 Hot 100/# 30 R&B). Not a bad year.

By the 1970s Maresca had gone on to a career as an executive with Laurie Records, and while this is certainly an interesting - if unremarkable - compilation, if you only want his charted hit that is available on any number of 1960s retrospective compilations.
