Product Description

Product Description

The Tao Te Ching is one of the most beloved books of Eastern wisdom. It is ascribed to Lao Tzu, “Master Lao,” identified as Lao Tan, an archivist of the Chou dynasty in pre-imperial China. The book was reorganized several centuries later, and thousands of commentaries were written on it. Ancient versions discovered in the twentieth century follow the old order as confirmed by the earliest extant commentary, Interpreting Lao, written by the famous philosopher Han Fei in the third century BC. The present translation is based on these ancient texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu. 13 April 2013

I have other editions / translations of this work but this particular volume is a very early recording. Purchased because I wanted this possibility to look backwards as more current translations could possibly lose something.

1.0 out of 5 stars Basic 24 Mar 2014

The books opens up with an introduction, which seems to continue into the main body of the book without a dividing marker. Compound this with the absence of a 'table of contents', and you having got a clue where you are, as this version does not read like any I have come across before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Deep Reading 25 Dec 2012
By Ezra Bai - Published on Amazon.com
I appreciate the independant passages that can be taken as separate nuggets of wisdom, but it is such a short read it us worthwhile to complete the entire text several times. Some of the translation is awkward and vague but that may be necessary to avoid commentary and interpretation. If you are intereasted in eastern thought, This is a good place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars simple, but it works 9 Jun 2013

I love these free or affordable translations of classical texts on Kindle that have allowed me to read very broadly without spending a fortune lately. It's hard to know if you're getting a faithful translation sometimes, but the quality is evident once you get into the text, and there's no risk at this price point, of course. A beautiful cover or layout would be nice, but I understand there are costs associated with these things that I'm not paying for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much thought, too little inspiration 30 Nov 2013
By Charles Riley Messer - Published on Amazon.com

This may be picky, I believe too much of an expansion of thought in the sayings of the wise diminishes the impact on the individual. My father used to say that "wisdom is having a lot to say on a subject and not saying it". The wise leave their sayings vague on purpose to allow the reader to discover themselves in the verses. This version attempts to make the transition in languages clear and destroys the ability to discover one's self.
