The Original Star Trek Box features three cds, each disc containing music from two episodes from the series.

CD1 features score from the original pilot episode 'The Cage', featuring Captain Christopher Pike. Then it goes on from 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', featuring everyone's favourite Captain, James T Kirk.

CD2 features score from season one episodes 'Shore Leave' and 'The Naked Time'. Shore Leave, if you recall, was quite a light hearted episode, featuring some fun scores for each of the crew. The Naked Time mixed both drama and fun action into one, both featuring some memorable tracks.

CD3 features score from season two episodes 'The Doomsday Machine' and 'Amok Time'. 'Doomsday' was an edge of your seat episode where Captain Kirk's life hung in the balance as his ship was taken over by a crazy Commodore. The music featured worked well to set the tone and pace of the action, even if we knew Kirk was likely to win the no win scenario. 'Amok Time' features some of the best music of the series, the highlight of course being the music playing as friends Kirk and Spock are forced to fight to the death, thanks to Spock's twisted wife. Thankfully he dumps her at the end.

Most of the music you may recognize from other episodes as the score was reused again. All three CDs open with the Star Trek Theme, and end with the end credits. CD1 credits however have a slightly different sound from the two following CDs but the music is still entertaining.

If you remember how much you enjoyed the music from the series, then you should check this collection out. Definitely worth one listen.

This is a great box set for those people who love the dramatic, romantic and sometimes comic music composed for the original Star Trek series; music that wasn't equalled until the great film scores for the Star Trek movies (1 through to 3; when is Search For Spock going to be reissued?!!!!) and I don't think has been bettered, even with all of the music that was composed for the later Star Trek spinoffs.

I have to admit the The Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before are not my favourite episodes, and so it it often hard to recall what scenes the music for them relates to. But the great thing about Star Trek was that it borrowed heavily from earlier scores in later episodes, so there are lots of cues that bring back vivid memories of other stories (for example Vena's slave dance is used at the beginning of Wolf In The Fold when Kara dances). Half the fun is working out where they were used again!

Shore Leave and The Naked Time are more familiar, and there are plenty of cues that bring back specific memories, as well as some that are re-used in later stories, especially the cue for the comic antics of Finnegan.

The last CD containing the scores for The Doomsday Machine and Amok Time are worth the cost on their own - two superb stories with equally superb and unique scores - each cue bringing back vivid images of what was occuring on screen - the nervous tension as The Constellation is sucked into the planet killer; Kirk desperately waiting for the transporter to be fixed in time - Spock's iconic fight scene with Kirk on Vulcan, where he seemingly kills the Captain (Spoiler! lol). Excellent stuff - which what more, inticed my daughter to watch those episodes (and more) on DVD.

If only they'd gather the cues for my all time favourite story 'The City On The Edge Of Forever' - oh well, here's hoping - and that blooming Search For Spock reissue (get to it somebody!).

Why buy this when you could get the 'Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection (Seasons 1-3) Box Set' from instead?
Seriously, if you're a Star Trek fan you should at least consider this comprehensive set.

It's a limited edition of 6000 so take a look now.

The first thing that hits you when you play these discs is the quality. LaLaLand have done an fantastic job here and these recordings sound amazingly good. Most of my generation recall the music with fondness but in those early days we were all listening to these sounds through a little TV speaker. Even when Crescendo released a few choice soundtracks from the series they were good but not particularly overwhelming.

It's not only a testament to the skill and dedication of everyone at LaLaLand but also to the sound engineers who made these recordings in the first place. Their standard was clearly very high even though at the time this was just another show made on a tight budget.

This technical marvel of sound recording has been given new vitality and the effect is stunning. It was clearly a labor of love and all for a mere 6000 copies. As someone else has mentioned, that makes this release a potentially serious investment.

And it's so complete. All the tracks that were used in the show plus a whole load of other quality stuff too including a few sound FX. The sound of Captain Pike bumping the window of his prison cell in 'The Cage' is here and it's strange how such a little thing can transport the listener back to that amazing first episode. These recordings also deliver quite an emotional punch. Some of the very best and most moving cues have simply not been released before and the effect is sensational.
