Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Now that techno is both a dance genre and a central part of the "intellectual pop" landscape, Sheffield electronica renegades Cabaret Voltaire are routinely described as a massive influence on the rave era. Oddly, this excellent compilation of their early work accidentally reveals that they were more followers than followed. Formed in pre-punk 1973 by Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson and named after a Dadaist club, it is true that they were experimenting with early synths, loops, cut-ups and political paranoia before most other arty types. But the good stuff starts with 1979's "Nag Nag Nag", which was simply 1977 punk rock played on machines. By the time we've reached 1980's "Obsession" (which blatantly rips off Metal Box by Public Image Ltd), we get the idea. This isn't just a primer for the Cabs; it's a handy summing-up of post-punk, an enthusiastic meld of PiL, The Fall, Gang of Four, The Pop Group, dub, Suicide and the pre-pop Human League. So... deep, meaningful and influential? No. Mutant art-pop fun? Definitely. And what's wrong with that? --Garry Mulholland

Remixes that Work 13 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Cabaret Voltaire belong on vinyl. It seems an odd thing to say about an electronic band but vinyl was the medium of the 80s and it's still the dance DJ's choice.

Why so? The 12 inch remix. For most bands, the extended tracks just stretched what little content there was and filled in the gaps with a 'Stars on 45' back beat that made dancefloor fades between tracks a doddle.

Not in this case. This CD really works. There was always so much going on in CVs tracks that one version could never be enough. Of course, they filled dancefloors, but they also had content. They revealed more and more with each hearing.

It doeesn't replace the originals, but it adds plenty. Whether it's your first taste or it's completing the collection, this CD is an essential.

At last, Sensoria on CD....and it's the 12" version. Before 1988, when House music dominated the club scene, The Hacienda club in Manchester used to play an eclectic mix of music on Saturday nights. Sensoria was one of those tunes.

I've had most of their vinyl for years, but at last I now have the convenience of some of their best on CD.

Basically a 'Best Of' compilation featuring the full 12" mixes of well known tracks from the group.

Standout tracks include the driving rhythmic mix of 'Just Fascination', a good mix of 'Don't Argue' and 'Here To Go' and the excellent 'I Want You' which many believe is their best song. Also notable for the inclusion of Dream Ticket' previously only available on a vinyl release, which is deleted.

Some tracks don't work however. The 12" mix of 'Sensoria', in my view, does not live up to the original. Maybe this is because it's interspersed with 'Do Right' instead of being a mix in its own right. The mix of 'James Brown' does sound a little dated, but then again it was recorded over 18 years ago!

Overall, a superb introduction to the influential music of this Sheffield based group. A group which is held in high regard by acts like New Order, Kraftwerk and artists like Meat Beat Manifesto and Derrick May.
