Book Description

20 Nov 2012
For the 77.5 million dog owners (or "parents") in the United States, The Original Dog Tarot card set and booklet is an amusing tool that gives human beings essential insight into the canine psyche.

Want to know why your dog shreds your slippers but ignores his designer toys? Does your pooch really want a puppy for companionship, or are you delusional? The Original Dog Tarot is an entertaining, tongue-in-jowl deck of tarot cards and accompanying book affectionately written for dog lovers who want to divine their canine's mind. The 30 cards are a takeoff on the traditional tarot; they're divided into the Major Barkana and Minor Barkana. Each card offers advice for both canines and the humans in their lives. You don't have to be familiar with traditional tarot to use this deck. It is a witty and wise stand-alone oracle for anyone who has given up mastering the techniques of The Dog Whisperer.

1.0 out of 5 stars No! 4 Jan 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
As a long time dog person, I was looking forward immensely to this deck. Having bought a copy my advice is "don't bother". It's a novelty, at best an oracle deck, at worst it seek to take the whatsit out of Tarot. "Barkana"? Madness! It is a much mongrelised descendant of a brilliant tradition bearing a similar relationship to Tarot as your next door neighbour's eight-years-old's pop group does to Bach's chamber music.

With so many well-realised cat-based Tarots around, you may be forgiven for thinking that this is a dog equivalent: it isn't. Frankly it's possibly on the young side for the eight year old of the previous paragraph.

5.0 out of 5 stars ratehr small pack - cards not dogs 14 Dec 2012

enjoyable but rather small pack - somehow I have expected a bit larger pack of cards not dogs. As it is new then maybe the next edition will be a bit larger.

1.0 out of 5 stars The tittle is misleading, it is not a TAROT pack 6 April 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking forward to this pack as there are not many "dogs" tarot around and very good tarot based on feline.

What a disappointment!

First the tittle is misleading, it is not a tarot pack at all. Only 30 cards as opposed as 78 cards with a tarot pack.

Some cards are labelled like the tarot (The Fool, The Magician, The Moon, The Sun, The Chariot, The Wheel of Fortune and Justice) but the numerological correspondence is totally wrong. The Fool is number 1, The Magician is 2, The Moon is 17, The Sun is 8, The Chariot is 12, The Wheel of Fortune is 17 and Justice is 18!

There are 4 suits with 3 cards each. The suits are bowls, leashes, biscuits and bones. There is a feeble attempt to make them like traditional pip cards, with no illustration, just a symbol of each suit repeated according to a number.

On these points alone, one wonders why this pack has been labelled Tarot. It is a best an oracle, at worst just a few cards with no substance in the tarot, numerology or astrology.

The only good thing, is that the illustration of the "major arcana" (and I would use the word major arcana loosely here) are very good. What a shame that the artist had to lend their talent to such a mediocre project.

The idea of a canine tarot is a great one and overdue.
If the artist Marty Blake could work with somebody with a deep knowledge of the Tarot, then a Dog tarot could be a winner!

Overall, I feel I have wasted some hard earned money on something that would sit on a shelf for years to come.
If you are serious about the Tarot, this pack will be a major disappointment.
