Ah, PTW's legendary debut album. Back in the day i was quite the hardcore fan before i got back into metal, and Oppossite of December was often my weapon of choice.

While those listening to the band for the first time might not find much new going on here, let them remember that PTW were one of the pioneering bands of this style and OOD spawned many an imitator on both sides of the Atlantic. It seems so simple looking back at what they did - combining the red-raw aggression of metallic hardcore with the sad, melancholic sounds of bands like Novembre of Hypocracy whilst throwing in plenty of crushing metal thrashing and stattaco riffs with some wonderfully dynamic and well placed clean singing and acoustic breaks - but at the time when this album dropped they were sublime. Enshewing hardcore's overt macho-ness, the band showed an amazing degree of humanity and vulnerabiliy beneath the storming metallic mealstrom of tortured screaming, churning guitars and Chris Hornbrock's tight drumming. Despite this, the band also avoid the pitful of many that followed them by not letting the softer moments become pitiful angsty whining, and as far as the whole hardcore/metalcore thing goes, i think OOD really found a perfect balance between aggression and melody - screaming with soul and purpose.

For me, it's kinda strange to look back at this album, which was for a long time my favourite. I remember the days when the 2nd wave of hardcore was just breaking. it was the late 90s early 2000s, nu-metal was at its peak and the metal airwaves were awash with tedious rap-metal and equally boring alternative-grunge rock bands that all sounded about 10 years out of date.

POison the well are as quality a Hardcore band as you can find. The band are soon to release 4th album proper "You come before you" which is amazing. "The opposite of demember" (2nd album proper) shows the quiality of the band even at this early stage int heir career! An underground favourite who have steadily risen to fame and for good reason.
Musically the album is a mix of searing guitars, moving from chunky muted riffs to soaring open chords. The basslines could do with being higher int he mix (but hey, you cant have everything). The drumming is usual harcore quality and the vocals are excellent! (growling screaming and a little singing for good measure).
In a sea of similar hardcore bands PTW are the cream of the crop! Always refining their sound and not afraid to progress unlike other hardcore bands! The lyrics are angry. the music is angry. but this is beautiful! This is the kind of ugly yet beautiful music that gives you a shiver down your spine.
Get this! Dont think about it! just get it! If you dont like it you dont like metal. Go back to your limp bizkit CD and sit in the corner!

this is poison the wells debut album and is seven years old now,but retains all of its anger, melody and purpose. Its an album that has as much emotion as any album you are likely to hear and at 28 minutes long is extremely focused and is all killer.

The album opens with the jawbreaking classic 12/23/93 and in those 3 minutes you get a prime example of what the band are about, spine breaking brutality with fearless melodies and sing a long chorus',maybe thats standard practice now and maybe even then but this is more than run of the mill music.

Slice paper wrists is the most memorable track of them all i would say as it is impossible not to love this song from the first listen,a million bands have been inspired by this grounbreaking album and i will leave it up to you to decide if they bettered it,i will say that the production isnt the strongest here but thats only a small gripe, nerdy is a heavy song that again will leave you in a shivering mess, the album closes with my mirror no longer reflects which is chaotic and builds into a crescendo of brutal riffing insanity, all in all an album you shouldnt ignore for much longer.

PTW, what can you say about them? you could say that they're are one of the best bands of their genre but that wouldn't be enough, PTW blend anger, depression and so much beauty into their music, their songs basically bleed emotion, what PTW do the best is in their originality, forget about song structure this band want you to be suprised, screaming, melodic singing they do it all, and damn well.
This album in my opinion is their best, it's classic stuff from beginning to end, the opening track "12-23-93" sets the album up perfectly, simple guitars to even the most complexed riffs leading into a great chorus, and that's what you're going to get through the album.
Honourable mentions are the songs "Artists Rendering Of Me", "Slice Paper Wrists", "Nerdy", and the best PTW song in my opinion "My Mirror No Longer Reflects", an outstanding song, with a great guitar riff at the end of the song.
