I wondered if a book about a disabled student could be as entertaining as my friends (and the review in the Independant )claimed it to be.It was. Although the humour was a little dark at times,it was cleverly sustained throughout and the story line kept me engrossed to the end. Maybe I wouldn't recommend it to my mother or anyone who could be easilly offended, but it would make a great Christmas present for more broad minded peolple. I will certainly be watching out for further books from this author.

Hard act to follow 7 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
I didn't quite know what I'd be getting with The Opposite Bastard as it's a first novel, but I saw the review in the Daily Express and took the plunge. It's brilliant - a funny but in the end romantic story set in Oxford that has a pop at many of the sacred cows of our day: political correctness, our attitudes to the handicapped, and (especially) the media get their come-uppance. Although it's got a healthy dose of cynicism there's also a satisfying ending. It's like Tom Sharpe's Porterthouse Blue crossed with Little Britain with enough love interest to stop it turning sour. Excellent!

Terrific! 30 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a terrific book, and I couldn't put it down. The premise is clever, and the story is told from three points of view: The Actor, The Quadriplegic, and The Virgin. It takes place at Oxford and revolves around the production of Hamlet. The voices are strong and distinctive, and the writing snaps and is pithy.

There were many laugh-out-loud moments, particularly the sarcastic exchanges between The Actor and The Quadriplegic. At the same time, beneath the humor, there were rich insights into all the characters. One moment, I was laughing and the next I was touched by their struggles, liking them in spite of themselves, wanting them to become better people.

Excellent book!
