I really enjoyed this book and I am surprised that the only other UK reviewer to date only gave it three stars.

I found it to be well written with a credible plot that moved along at a steady but not too slow a pace. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and even though the ending is unusual, I found it no more unbelievable than many of the thrillers I have read.

The characters are all well written, develop nicely during the story and play their parts in the story in a credible and interesting way.

Strangely enough the only thing which I found jarred a little, was the fact that the author wrote the main character in the first person, but everyone else in the third person. It took a bit of adjustment each time the POV changed and I'm not sure what was gained by this.

As for the typos, they were restricted to hyphens appearing mid word and I suspect that this was a scanning or software issue, but I was able to ignore them and they did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel.

I highly recommend this book to you and will look out for more by this author.

Sam wakes up in his car by the side of the road with no memory of how he got there. When he returns home his wife Maureen is missing. Unfortunately for Sam this isn't the first time this is happened, his first wife Lisa disappeared seven years ago and when her body was found a week later he was very nearly convicted of her murder. With his history it's not surprising that he is now the main suspect in Maureen's disappearance.

I liked this book and found it was easy to get into from the start. As the reader we know as much about Maureen's disappearance as Sam dose which I liked as I found myself asking the same questions as Sam was. I also liked how the writing changed from first person when we were seeing things from Sams point of view to third person when we were seeing things from Hannah, the detectives, perspective. I think this was a cleaver way of getting the reader to empathise with Sam.

Over all I thought this was a good book, however I did think the ending was pretty far fetched to say the least (I can't say more than that without ruining the story) but the characters were well written enough for me to be able to be able to get past that.

My only other really criticism was there were a lot of typos which did become a little frustrating. I also don't think that the book had been formatted properly as there were a lot of occasions words had a - in the as though the word had been written over two lines even when it hadn't.

Brilliant new thriller 21 Oct 2005
By David Montgomery - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Jonnie Jacobs' brilliant new thriller "The Only Suspect" is one of the most entertaining books you're likely to read this year.

The story opens with Dr. Sam Russell waking on the side of a deserted country road, with bruises on his face and blood under his fingernails. Battered and confused, he has no memory of how he got there.

Sam arrives home only to discover that his wife is missing. He reluctantly calls the police, looking for help. Dark events from his past resurface to haunt him, making him the only suspect.

The story builds in suspense to an almost painful level, as this kind and decent man (who might just be a vicious killer) is tortured by his loss and the possible role he could have played in it.

Jacobs is best known for her series of novels featuring lawyer Kali O'Brien. Now she moves to the head of the thriller class with this topnotch page-turner.

nail-biting, page turning suspense 27 Nov 2005
By major fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I have read every book Jonnie Jacobs has written, and this is one of her best yet. It is not a Kali or Kate book, but a stand-alone thriller, that kept me on the edge of my seat until I was finished. The characters were real people I felt I could root for, and the story was so suspenseful, I almost couldn't stand it! What I don't understand is why Jonnie Jacobs isn't high on the best seller list with books so well-written and involving. I am just sorry I will have to wait until her next book comes along.

Exciting but predictable 21 Nov 2005
By L. J. Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Ms. Jacobs is a very good writer and I've enjoyed her other books. This book has an excellent premise; the innocent man who appears guilty. Unfortunately, it's offset by stereotypical characters; the overbearing male detective, the female detective who believes the suspect in spite of the evidence because she feels an attraction to him, the in-laws who never thought he was good enough for their daughter, the underachieving brother, etc. There were twists to the plot, but I found most of them predictable. It's fast paced book that would make a great airplane book, but I think she's written better.
