I have yet to forgive Blink 182 for covering 'Another Girl, Another Planet' but then again perhaps it will help inspire a new generation to explore the work of one of the standout fringe-punk bands of the era? What really made The Only Ones special is that they could actually play a really tight set live and this knowledge helps one appreciate how good the studio albums are. I doubt if there were two many takes - just play it like we would on tour and get it down on an 8-track! Another Girl, may be the best song the Only Ones ever recorded but unfortunately this is definitely not the best collection. There is just a bit too much slow stuff going on for my liking. However, it's well worth persisting with because it finishes with two great songs. 'No Peace For The Wicked' is a down tempo number but it is light on instrumentation and gives the listener a chance to appreciate Peter Perret's unique slightly-vexed sounding vocals accompanied by a light but catchy guitar riff. The Immortal Story is a belting number to finish off with and gives us a taste of what is to come on 'Even Serpents Shine' - good tempo, inventive instrumentation and a double-dose of Perret vocals. If you're only going to buy one Only Ones CD, get a compilation. However, it's fantastic that you can get all of the three original studio LPs on CD and it's well worth completing the collection!
