What a fantastic new song! Over the 30 years or so the Cure have been releasing singles they have come up trumps again and again with brilliant tunes, instantly memorable and a perfect blend of accomplished musical backgrounds intertwined perfectly with Robert Smith's distinctively charming voice.
The Only One is a perfect example of this winning formula, Robert's vocals sounding on top form and kicking off with a nice little guitar hook. What i love most about The Only One though is that after the artful but heavy sounding Bloodflowers and self titled The Cure albums, this sees the band returning to their more pop-based side which has been relatively untouched since the Greatest Hits singles and in an album as a whole - Wild Mood Swings.
The Only One is instant and catchy while still retaining that distinctive 'Cure sound' that has ensured them such a devoted fanbase over the years. In a career where they have dabbled with so many different elements and sides to themselves, this song sees the band evidently enjoying themselves greatly and serves as an extremely promising taster for the forthcoming album.
B-side NY Trip is also top quality material, an intricate wall of sound enveloping the listener and serving as a perfect counterpoint to the carefree sound of the a-side.
It would have been nice maybe to have a different b-side from the CD on the 7" version of the single, but all things considered, it's just great to have the band releasing new stuff that is as good as this.
